The Army Corps of Engineers is moving into the seventh month of a project to build a new lock in the Columbia. Before the new lock is done, there will be hundreds of blasts like this one. Here, a railroad line will need to be moved aside, where tracks now run, tugs and barges and pleasure boats will sail when the project's done. The new lock will cost more than $200 million, and when it's finished, we'll share river traffic with an adjoining lock. That one has been called the worst navigation bottleneck along the entire Columbia River. The existing lock at Bonneville was built 50 years ago and by today's standards is too narrow. Tugboats are forced to jockey their loads to get through. The new lock will be wider. A six hour job will be done in 45 minutes. Meanwhile, channeling work is going on upstream. The Columbia River, just east of the new lock, needs to be dug out and made navigable.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71061/file/157012#t=2565.57,2634.23
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71061/file/157012/transcript/88419/annotation/109
Speaker 35: The time allowed to work in the river is very short due to fish passage so we have only a window in which we can work so it's probably the scheduling constraints that are the most difficult.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71061/file/157012#t=2634.83,2647.59
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71061/file/157012/transcript/88419/annotation/110
Speaker 37: If the schedule holds, the super scoop will be done and the lock open to traffic in about five years.
