Fighting for survival in some of the toughest times in history, they can't afford to be stuck in port when the fish are biting. Just 30 miles outside the port of Sayuslaw lie the Hesita Banks, one of the richest fishing grounds off the Pacific coast. Commercial fishermen come from as far away as Newport and Coose Bay for the salmon, cod, snapper, and halibut feeding out there. But right now, very few come from Florence because the bar is so dangerous. But all of that is about to change. The Army Corps of Engineers has now awarded a $25 million contract. Extend the jetties on both sides of the bar. The North Jetty will be extended 1,900 feet, the south 2,300. In addition, each jetty will have a 400-foot spur on the seaward side to stop the movement of sand into the navigation channel. The whole project will cover 26 acres of ocean bottom of rock. Much of that rock will come from quarries near Mapleton. Another is how to move the rock without destroying State Highway 126. For almost two years. All of that rock will have to come through the city of Florence to reach the jetties. That could prove to be a major headache for the city council and mayor Greg Anderson. Here it is a week before Thanksgiving. Last time I talked about all the fresh fruit that was going to be in season for the holidays. Today I'm going to tell you about the vegetables. In general, everything is good. I know I'm good and I hope you are, but the vegetables are really good. Most things are in good supply at a reasonable price. Let's look at the good things first. Yams and sweet potatoes, 39 to 59 cents a pound, depending on the size. The larger yams and sweets will cost you more than the smaller ones. The quality is the same. Cabbage in good supply, 29 cents a pound. Yellow onions, 19 to 29 cents a pound. Very, very good right now. Carrots, 25 cents a pound, very good. Locally, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, all coming in. A little higher price, 59 to 69 a pound, but very good quality. Now let's look at the things that are going to be high priced for the holidays. Celery out of California, 59 to 69 cents a pound, a little higher price, short supply. The tomato market is escalating, which means it's getting more expensive. If they come out of Florida, they won't be very good and they will be expensive as high as 80 cents a pound. Lettuce, you might go to leaf lettuce for your salad this next week. Head lettuce is going to be close to a dollar a head. Cranberries are also going to be in short supply. You might pick up your cranberries and freeze them. They freeze well and they keep just fine. Finally, if you're going to be making a pumpkin pie and you can't find a pumpkin, you might consider a butternut squash or a golden delicious squash. If you season it properly, it'll taste even better than a pumpkin pie. So all in all, it looks like a very good week for everything. Have a nice safe holiday for eyewitness news. I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586#t=2075.67,2159.03
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586/transcript/87625/annotation/90
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586#t=2356.22,2356.54
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586/transcript/87625/annotation/91
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586#t=2357.46,2357.46
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586/transcript/87625/annotation/92
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586#t=2357.86,2357.86
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70640/file/156586/transcript/87625/annotation/93
Speaker 22: Right.
