One after another, they pointed out their particular problems. Some said the work was making it impossible for motorists to find their way into parking lots. Others said the road widening was taking away their parking. Some wondered when the project would finally be over. State Engineer Dave Roberts said the contract ran until October, but was ahead of schedule and could be completed by the summer. It's designed to improve the Highway 58 road bed through Oak Ridge and widen it to five lanes. The fifth will be a continuous left turn lane. The state says the new lane will make things safer, but that conclusion was challenged today by those who said LOD trucks would now roar through town at speeds of 50 miles an hour. High-priced items this week. Tomatoes out of Mexico, going up to over $1 a pound again. And yellow onions, a very small crop this year, until we get into some Oregon onions, going up $0.49, $0,59 a pound now, very high priced. Let's look over at the fruit department. Bananas, which have been running about $0 .50 a pound, they're starting to come down a little bit. And that's good news. Strawberries out of California, they're staring to come about $1 a basket, a little higher than that, but prices will be coming down. Looking at citrus, California grapefruit, Texas grapefruit. Orange is coming in now Very, very good, good quality, good price. Now is the time to eat California and Texas citrus. Apples now, controlled atmosphere. That means they've been in an oxygen-free atmosphere to keep them from getting too mellow, whatever that means. That means, they rot on the inside. When you take a bite, they're all kind of black. Well, the controlled atmosphere are much better. They're higher priced, but better quality. Finally, item of the week, Haas avocados. Now, you've seen these fuertes and bacons in Zutano type avocados, but the Haas variety. They're the very finest. They're a little more money. They're thick green skin, but they're excellent. Remember Haas? Think kind of like of Haas Cartwright, Haas Avocados. Excellent buy this week. Half a million dollars crumpled on the crater floor when a powerful wind slammed it down during takeoff Friday. The pilot and four geologists were evacuated quickly and safely, but salvaging the broken Jet Ranger had to wait for clearance from federal inspectors. The pieces of the helicopter lay less than a mile from the lava dome, the dome dominating the crater now, perpetual steam plumes rising all around, gasses in the steam turning the sun's rays red, yellow, and orange. When Cascade Helicopter Service of Scapuz received permission to remove its aircraft from the crater, they called in a giant Boeing Vertal 107, a twin-engine workhorse that Columbia Aviation uses for logging. The wreckage was lifted for a final forlorn flight from Mount St. Helens. As the big chopper rounded the west side of the volcano, observers in an escort helicopter radioed their worry that the twisting of the wrecked fuselage tail and rotor blade would snap the carrying cable. The giant fur tall crept along at 20 or 30 miles an hour across vast forests south of the mountain toward the swift reservoir where another ground crew waited. The cargo continued to spin. Finally, the bottom tether broke and the rotor and tail assembly dropped away into the trees to be recovered later.
