Zucchini, yellow squash coming in right now. Very good price, 30 to 40 cents a pound. Fresh beets coming in right now. Beets, you can use the top, steam them, they're very much like spinach. And the bottoms are excellent in salads or pickled, my favorite. Cauliflower coming in locally. Little higher price, but wonderful quality. Lettuce of all kinds, red leaf, head lettuce, green leaf, romaine. 20, 30, 40 cents a piece, depending on the size and the quality. Great week for a salad. Green beans, cucumbers, really round out the local scene this week. Out of California, tomatoes coming on a little stronger. Now the markets have been high about a dollar a pound. This week they're down about 60 to 70 cents a pound. Quality is improving, and for the next two or three months, we should be seeing lower prices on tomatoes. That's good news. Over in the fruit market, what's happening? Peaches are probably your best buy at 40 to 60 cents a pound. Very nice quality. Also from California and Arizona, grapes and melons. Seedless grapes, about a dollar and a quarter a pound. And melons, candy loop, candy loop, cantaloupe, honeydew, and crenshaw melons, all wonderful quality melons, 29 to 49 cents a pound. Locally, bing cherries about a dollar a pound. It's going to be a short season and a quick season, but the cherries are wonderful right now. Finally, locally, raspberry season has just begun. Strawberry season is just about finished up. Raspberry is coming in about a dollar a basket. I love raspberries. Never get enough raspberries. Most of the rest are still enrolled in meditation courses and will stay longer, but the last of the visitors is expected to be out by the 20th of July. On their way out, the busses are going through the nearby town of Antelope, where there's been a continuing battle between longtime residents and the newcomers in their orange clothes. For the duration of the Rajhnish world celebration, there has been a truce here. Antelope's mayor Margaret Hill says she has no complaints about the festival. Everything was nice and quiet. The town was back to normal because all the Rajhnishis were out at the ranch celebrating. Once again today, the followers of the Bhwan Shri Rajnish are back in Antelope. But there are far more of them at Portland International Airport, where they're meeting the flights that will take them to their homes across the United States, or to Europe, Asia, or Australia. After July 20th, the city of 1,800 tents will be taken down and folded up, and the emphasis again here at Rajneesh Param will be on the building of a religious commune. I'm here in the University of Oregon Map Library looking at maps. Now that I'm fishing even more than just big fish all over the country, I'm fishing for money nowadays. I'm gonna fish a $350,000 bass tournament at Lake Mead in August. I'm here at the University of Oregon Map Library looking at maps of the bottom of the lake. They've got really complex maps here, and that's what I'm here looking at. I want to know exactly what the bottom of that lake looks like. You might not need to know exactly what a lake looks like. You might just need to know what lakes are in the area. A good map will do that for you. There's a lot of different places to pick up maps. Feeding dairy cows is no problem in the summertime, but come winter it's a different story. Hay has to be stored for winter use. Most farmers cut it, chop it up, and throw it into a silo, but air and moisture in the hay makes it ferment in a silo, giving off a lot of heat and robbing the feed of precious nutrients. Well, up at the Pew Dairy Farm near Shed, they do things a little differently. Five years ago, Jack Pugh bought a silage compressor. It squeezes all the air out of the hay and packs it tightly into huge plastic bags that look like giant insect larvae. No air in the hay means no fermentation and better feed for the cows. The DC-10 slid off the runway into Boston Harbor, snapping off the nose of the jumbo jet. Miraculously, only two people were reported missing and presumed dead. It has also been a year of overseas accidents. In February, a Japan Airlines DC-8 crashed into Tokyo Bay, killing 24 passengers. Pilot Air was blamed. And just this week, an aeroflot passenger jet crashed and burned on the outskirts of Moscow, killing all 90 aboard. In all, then, five major airline accidents this year alone. Particularly tragic since there has not been a commercial air crash in this country since May of 1979. It was then when the United States suffered its worst air disaster. An American Airlines DC-10 crashed in Chicago, killing 275. A defective engine mount assembly or pylon was blamed for the accident. 727s, like the one lost in today's crash, have been involved in 36 accidents over the years. 1978, a Pacific Southwest 727 collided with a small aircraft over San Diego. 144 people were killed. And in 1975, an eastern 727 crashed short of the runway at JFK in New York, killing 113 passengers. Bad weather was again a factor. Throughout aviation history, poor weather conditions have played a role in tragedies involving major air carriers. The reactions of shock and grief were familiar sights in tragedies of this kind. Many of those waiting clearly had no idea the flight had gotten into trouble. They were ushered under guard into a nearby room to wait for some more definite word from Pan Am officials in New York. In San Diego, there was also a waiting room with a priest and a rabbi standing by to offer help. But by the hour of 759's scheduled arrival here, only a handful of people had called for information. Six showed up at the airport and then left. Among those listed on the flight were five members of a family coming in from Miami for the funeral of a relative killed in a motorcycle accident this week. Late today, two employees of Pacific Southwest Airlines came here to Pan Am to offer any help they could. Now governors have been saying that for a long time. And and people have been saying that for a long time. One is the concept. Yeah, that's a good idea, indeed. But then when you put it in actual practice, it becomes more complicated. It's it's almost a readjustment of people's thinking. Years ago, people were concerned for their neighbors. And as government federal government became larger and larger, people sort of turned it over to the federal government and became very remote. Now it's coming back. Well people have to kind of start changing their thinking, their attitudes. Yesterday conference, full day, good conference, we talked about voluntary, which is of course not going to replace it all. We talked about corporate responsibility, where they should make their contributions and there were some good suggestions of how some corporations are now doing it in a variety of ways. But it's a it's a mental attitude. And I think that Oregon by moving into this, this is the only state that's had such a conference as this and gathered the kind of people as we did. And it wasn't just business, it was labor, churches, elected officials, a variety of people gathered and together, say, hey, this is coming down the line. We don't know the details, but we've had to start thinking about it and be prepared for the day it comes. And I think it's a good move though.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70419/file/156363#t=3297.11,3383.71
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70419/file/156363/transcript/87026/annotation/134
Speaker 52: How can companies and business take over these new responsibilities when the economy has burdened them with all new responsibilities?
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70419/file/156363#t=3384.41,3391.85
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70419/file/156363/transcript/87026/annotation/135
Speaker 28: Well, of course it's tough now. The ob the real objective in my letter to the President, my first letter to the President, was saying that I thought federalism was good, but it was second in priority to recovering our economy. And if the economy recovers, then we're gonna be in a better position to accept federalism. But we can't, you know, those things happen outside of our control. They don't come according to our timing, but it still can be done. And there's some very good examples. And of course, like I've worked as a governor, I've said to those working in state employment, I want you to volunteer. I I know your interest whatever it is, you know, it doesn't have to be any causes that I'm interested in. Volunteer to your community. Just in human resource alone.
