In 1974, two English authors created a minor stir with the publication of a book called the Jupiter effect. They theorized that an earthquake would devastate Southern California in early 1982. The trigger for that catastrophe, they said, would be an alignment of the nine planets combined with a peak in sunspot activity. At any given moment, the planets are distributed in random patterns throughout the solar system. But every 180 years, the four outer giant planets catch up with each other's orbits. The relatively rapidly spinning inner planets eventually end up on the same side of the Sun. But on March 10th, they will only be in a cluster, not a straight line. Earth here on the far right will be 98 degrees away from Neptune on the far left. The collective pull will only raise the Earth's ocean 1 25th of a millimeter, less than the thickness of a piece of paper. And although the sun is in the peak of its regular sunspot cycle, there's no evidence to indicate that they cause earthquakes. So will it be worth your while to get up before sunrise on March 10th? Take out. This is a churro, looks like a cactus, it's sort of like a doughnut, and this is a cubana, it's got milk and coconut. And this is an appetite that's been satisfied. Now for seafood around San Diego, head for the harbor. The massive Anthony's is part of a chain, but it's tops. You've got your choice of the lower priced fishette that's like an oyster bar, the medium priced restaurant, the halibut and bass are always fresh. Or if you've got $50 to blow, head next door for the star of the sea. Jackets and ties only. I'd avoid the well-known Humphreys, their cherry cheesecake was just awful, and I was not that impressed with the restaurants around the touristy Seaport Village. But one place not to miss is in a section of town called Mission Hills. Over at Peretz, they do seafood with a continental touch, and the seafood quiche is delicious. Soon you can start thinking about nightlife, but make sure to find a copy of San Diego's free weekly paper called The Reader. It lists everything that's going on. Oh, and by the way, the classifieds in here are free. If you have nothing to do one afternoon, you could make some interesting reading. We'll have the story on nightlife and the hotel scene in tomorrow's final report. San Diego has a lot of good hotels for all budgets. If you like double-knits, you'll probably like a section just off the freeway called Hotel Circle, filled with, you guessed it, many rooms are in the mid-20s. 10 minutes away, there's downtown. One standout here, the Little America West Gate. Always a five-star hotel with prices to match. But if I had the money in San Diego, I'd choose the old Hotel del Coronado, or the Dell as it's known around here. Built in the 1880s, she maintains grace. Plenty of resort activities, with rooms starting at about $60 a night, and for $140, you can enjoy the ocean view and jump in if it's too much. Now for the nightlife in San Diego. Downtown is picking up, but frankly, not that much yet. The streets belong mostly to the sailors and what they're after. I suggest an evening at the Old Globe Theater, which was just rebuilt after an arsonist burned it down four years ago. There's always action on stage.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70370/file/156314#t=889.53,1036.359
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70370/file/156314/transcript/86394/annotation/33
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70370/file/156314#t=1037.17,1037.17
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70370/file/156314/transcript/86394/annotation/34
Speaker 15: Next, I'd head for the ritzy section of La Jolla, and jazz at the Blue Parrot. Stripped of all its dollar signs and decimal points, it's basically a continuation of the county's current levels of service. Total spending is cut back from $110 to $107 million, a $3 million decrease. County's general fund will bear the brunt of that reduction as it drops from this year's $46 to next year's $43.2 million. And the reduction in the county full-time personnel continues. The equivalent of 83 more full- time jobs have been eliminated. A total trimming of some 330 full-time positions in just the last three years. But the big cuts in law enforcement that provoked such bloody courthouse battles last year will not be repeated. That is unless the public turns thumbs down on the county's $10 million tax base increase. This budget calls for modest increases for the sheriff and the district attorney, primarily to cover the cost of inflation. And the total law enforcement share of general fund expenditures continues close to 40%. There are no salary increases included in the budget, except for those required by union contracts. And county employees will be asked to carry the increased cost of their health benefits. The budget document itself won't be made public until Monday, so General Administrator George Morgan wouldn't comment today. But the figures do their own talking, and the message is clear. Morgan thinks county services have been trimmed to the bone. Any further cuts will have to come from the voters in the May primary. All testified that above anything else, Brown was a man of his word. In their closing statements, both attorneys agreed that Brown was unique man who had for the most part lived an exemplary life. The prosecution argued that Brown's stature was all the more reason he should have recognized that his acts were wrong. And asked for a five-year maximum penalty with some minimum sentence on the sodomy count and probation on the rape charge. The defense asked that Brown be released on probation, saying that society does not need him walled away. And in his own behalf, Brown asked for his release saying, certainly I am deeply sorry about the circumstances that led to this, and reaffirming his own promise to live within the law from now on. The participants were the 11 members of the Board of Higher Education scattered around the state meeting in executive session by conference call. And at issue was the continuing negotiations to bring a new chancellor to Oregon. On Friday, the board reluctantly revealed that they had made an offer of employment to Dr. George Weathersby, the Commissioner for Higher Education in Indiana. But Weathersbe has not accepted the terms of the board's initial offer. And today, Board President Ed Harms said that the Board now wants to explore Weathersby's philosophies about how the Chancellor's Office should be run. Three Board members spoke with Weathersbe by phone at length late this morning, and the Indiana educator will tentatively fly to Oregon Sunday for further meetings with the entire Board. In the meantime, Board president Ed Harm says media reports revealing Weathersbys' selection had put the board to a disadvantage and caused disappointment and concern to the other two finalists. Those finalists include William Davis, the president of the University of New Mexico, and George Rainsford, the president of Kalamazoo College in Michigan. Harms says both candidates have considered withdrawing their names in light of the revelation of Weathersby's name. That would present the board with a real problem if the negotiations with their first choice falls through. But despite Harms' concerns, it should be noted that the board's public services offices called Reporters Friday to tell them about Weathersbe's selection.
