And these small groups coalesced and coalesce into a steering committee, which formed this organization set up bylaws and set up officers. The organization is no attempt to represent the broad spectrum of the republican party. We are moderates and we are activists. And we are making it our job, but what we are trying to do is to broaden the base of the Republican Party. Being an unofficial group, we can do things that a normal political group established by law cannot do. We can endorse pre-primary. We can provide campaign funds pre-primary. We can do it pretty much as we choose. As you know, to cross the Rubicon means to take decisive action. And we have, within our first meeting, done just that. We are backing the Walk for Development. I think more than anything, we're going to have to see to it that we're ready and ready to play early. We're going to have to have. A lot of offense, a lot of defense. So one of the things we're concerned about is public health and how we might be able to work out programs for dealing with that kind of problem for low income people. We're also worried, I think, about the problems of young people in the high schools. We're worried about the problem of dropping out of high school, what happens to dropouts, where they go, and how, in fact, we can begin to re-engage those young people in some kind of meaningful occupations and meaningful kinds of commitments to living in the community. I think we could go on. Besides the housing and the young problem, I think, we have problems with the poor, generally. And that includes everything from welfare services to what it is that they can do now that the unemployment situation is as difficult as it is, what kind of programs that are available for them, making them aware of what programs and services are available. We have problems with senior citizens in this community, but they're essentially left out in many ways from the general communication and the general path of activity in a community. We have presented our preliminary planning well enough in advance so that people can express their feelings and concerns and allow us to respond. That is what this represents. And, of course, we have identified 79 out of nearly 500 sales that certain parties believe are worthy of further environmental discussion, so that now we are providing a series of breakfast meetings in which we outline our land use objectives, the possible conflicts, the provisions that we have made to resolve conflicts, and then a reassessment of whether we can go forward as planned, if we need modifications, or perhaps we need to scrub the sale altogether. This will allow the... General public, I guess, in this case, to view what we have done, provide comments, and allow us to go back and grind these comments back into our decision-making process. I think we are arriving at a point where all parties involved are becoming more responsible. They, the preservationists will say, I think, sense now that the Forest Service is going to listen and is going to be influenced in terms of change and reallocation of land uses. This places them in a position where they can be more reasonable and more practical in the information that they give us. And we are finding now that because of this position of responsibility, we are able to utilize public expression much better than we did before. And, of course, it is a two-way street. We have to be willing and I think the public has to recognize this and then they are able to provide inputs that are usable. I think French Peat represents a disagreement about how or what we are going to use the land for, not really how we might harvest timber or how we may provide recreation. And this, of course, is at the root of the whole problem, is that our system of allocating land uses is being tested and reexamined right now. We are looking again to see if land is best suited in terms of its physical attributes and. And future needs for timber harvest, for recreation, for wilderness, for all these things. This is not to be taken as a sudden reversal of American position because this is an implementation of the position that America has been striving to follow with small steps over the last two years. What we've seen in the last month in China is the first warming reaction to that I think that instead of just standing pat and firm and cold when we see that China does make efforts, which are conducive to normalization of relations, our stand should be we accept those, we are pleased to see it, and we are ready to move further ourselves toward bringing this nation of more than 700 million people into the community of nations. United States policy, governmental policy, cannot be made in the streets, however well-meaning the people who seek to achieve it. Now, so far as the veterans who've been in Washington this week is concerned, let me say to them, they have been up and down the Capitol Hill and around the streets of Washington for this last week. I have found them extremely law-abiding. They're basically sound. They have not attempted to use force or violence that I have seen any signs of. They're trying to make their point as to what they feel ought to be done. There was an effort made, a request made, for four of them to meet with me. I was anxious to do this because I wanted to hear specifically from our people how they felt. Primarily, I was interested in listening to them, to ask him what it is he felt, and what it was his own experience had been, and I found this very valuable from this line. But let me commend the veterans for the sincerity of what I have seen them demonstrate, it's certainly by this young man, and I commend them for their deep concern about the problem and their attempt to go about doing it, not in a violent fashion, but to make their views known to the Congress as they have every right in the world to do.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69257/file/155667#t=2237.77,2372.41
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69257/file/155667/transcript/79634/annotation/51
Speaker 19: In the event that it should become desirable, and you are the ones who will define this, we have people who are happy, willing, and eager for interviews at your discretion.
