And all I can tell you is the Pilgrims never had it this good. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to choose from this year. Most things are in season, are not going to be too expensive, and the quality is very good. You're going to make a pie. You don't want to use canned pumpkin. Try a nice sweet pie pumpkin or a baby blue squash related to the Harvard squash. Any of the squash family, which, by the way, are Native American vegetables. One of the few Native American vegetables we'll eat during the holidays can be used to make a wonderful pumpkin pie. Other vegetables coming in right now for Thanksgiving, yams and sweets, very reasonably priced. Same old screw with Brussels sprouts. You're going to stuff your turkey. Don't forget to add a little garlic and shallots for some nice flavor. Also, if you want to use a chestnut stuffing, fresh chestnuts. We're getting some local chestnuts, also some from Italy. Price is running about $2 to $3 a pound. Make a very good chestnut stuffing for that turkey. Some specialty items, fresh fennel coming in, artichokes, asparagus, some higher prices on these vegetables. But like I say, it is Thanksgiving. This might be one time of the year when you wanna splurge a little bit, serve some extra special stuff. Over in the fruit department, lots of good things. For desserts, how about some fresh pomegranates? Make a pomegrant sorbet, doesn't that sound tasty? How about some persimmons for a persimmon pudding? If you're going to do any pie baking, Granny Smith apple is coming in about 99 cents a pound, but probably the best apple for making pies. In citrus, we've got Indian River grapefruit, new crop of navels coming in, also out of California, Satsuma tangerines, the seedless zipskin tangerine, they are the very, very best, running about 79 cents a pound. Kiwi fruit out of California, a very beautiful fruit to cut and put on a platter. And finally, the only other Native American food that we eat during Thanksgiving, all the way from the cranberry bogs in Massachusetts, fresh cranberries. Again, these are the one fruit that is going to be in short supply. I do advise buying an extra bag of these, put them in the freezer, and you'll make sure you'll have them. So, all in all, lots of good things to choose from. Walk, get in your car, take your boat if it continues to rain, get down to the store, buy your stuff early, have a good, happy, healthy, safe Thanksgiving. For eyewitness news, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71050/file/157001#t=1138.52,1270.97
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71050/file/157001/transcript/88415/annotation/52
Speaker 28: Boulder Creek swallowed a bridge on the Mount Baker Highway. So is Lynn County, which is 3,000 people smaller, according to PSU. There's state money distributed on the basis of population at stake.
