Normally, this time of the year, December, produce prices begin to really escalate. But this year, because of good weather throughout most of the country and increased supplies, fresh fruit and vegetable prices have remained fairly constant. Summertime salad, well how about a wintertime salad, lettuce, salad greens, green onions, radishes, spinach, all those types of vegetables, all very reasonable this time of the year. Some things out of California, broccoli and cauliflower in particular, are beginning to move up at a very reasonable rate. Produced out of Mexico right now, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers of all types are also beginning to move up in price, but in general, Thank you very much. Thank you all. Vegetable prices are pretty good. Over in the fruit department, again, more good news. Well, seasonal things like pomegranates and persimmons remain a very good value. Getting a little late for them, but they are still excellent quality right now. We told you about all the tangerines and tangellos last week. They continue to be sweet, and new varieties continue to come on the market. Pears and apples, very good. Avocados. Now, you have a choice. You can spend less money and get a bacon avocado, which is a thin, green-skinned avocado, or more money and a haas avocado, a bumpy, dark-skined avocado. The haas will taste better, but cost two to three times as much. The choice is yours. Finally, the best buy in the whole fruit department this week, believe it or not, are bananas. Very weak market, meaning good prices for consumers, bananas as low as four or five, even six pounds for a dollar. So all in all, no bad news, make sure you go out and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables this week. State Senator Rod Monroe, Representative Peg Jolin, and a number of others are expected to introduce bills all aimed at the same target. Estacada was the 10th Oregon district to close its schools in the past decade. And this fall, the Cascade Union School District in Turner and the Coos Bay schools came within one vote of having to close their doors. The districts that have problems have antiquated tax bases. Coos Bay's dates from 1911. To keep these schools open, voters must approve another levy every year or two. Lately, it seems there's always some district on the brink of closing. Momentum is building in the legislature for that to stop. Most of the proposals floating around Salem include some way to guarantee up-to-date tax bases for every district, usually by making last year's level of spending the benchmark for the new tax base. It will be up to the legislators to pick and choose the best aspects of each plan. Rest assured, whatever they approve will be referred to the voters.
