And I'm kind of partial to fruits and vegetables, or people with larger noses. All the better to smell all the wonderful fragrances coming off of this fresh fruits and vegetable. And lots of good news this week. Over in the vegetable department. Local produce abounds this week. We talked about the Walla Walla Sweet Onions. An excellent buy this week, as low as $0.25 a pound. Zucchini, yellow squash coming in. You know it's summertime. Sweet corn coming in out of Washington. A quick tip on how to tell if sweet corn is fresh. Peel an ear and stick your finger in one of the kernels. If they squirt, that means the corn is fresh. If the kernel doesn't squirt it means it's been sitting around for a couple of days and you want to avoid it. Looks like we're going to have lots of nice tomatoes this year. Sunny weather, dry weather, tomatoes is starting to get ripe. Good tomato crop. So all in all, fresh vegetables locally coming in very strongly. Over in the fruit department, first let's go to California. Seedless grapes of all different kinds, red, green, and black coming in. You'll see some really cheap prices on seedless grapes. The grapes, very full of sugar and larger grapes right now running underneath a dollar a pound. Cantaloupe coming in out of the Imperial Valley, a very good price right now, as low as $0.25 a pound Locally what's happening? Well, it's just about the end of the cherry season. I told you it was kind of a short season. There are still some cherries around. Blueberries kind of in the middle right now. Good local blueberries running about a dollar to a dollar and a half a basket. We're just beginning to get into the fleshy droop season. What are fleshey droops? Well, that's peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots. Now, the be-first fruit that we're getting tend to be a little small, but the flavor is very good. The prices are reasonable. As the season wears on another week or two, we'll see nectarines and peaches really drop in price, probably half of what they are now. But once again, the flavor is good on peaches, plums, apricots, all coming in locally and out of Washington. So all in all, it's an excellent week for vegetables and an excellent to enjoy fresh produce. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70999/file/156950#t=223.59,347.07
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70999/file/156950/transcript/88237/annotation/13
Speaker 8: Motorists should be prepared to use the south side of 7th between Garfield and Polk this weekend. Five years of squabbling over how to protect the gorge was supposedly over last winter when the senators from both sides of the Colombia announced agreement. It was an ambitious plan calling for a 250,000 acre Columbia Gorg national scenic area. The gorge would be carved into two zones. A little less than half would be owned by the Forest Service and closed to developers. The rest would be designated scenic. And development would be regulated by a 12-member regional commission. When the senators put their plan on display at a public hearing this spring, nearly a hundred Northwesterners trekked all the way to Capitol Hill to complain. Environmentalists wanted stronger federal control to guard against incompatible development in the gorge. Local landowners didn't want the federal government telling them what to do with their property that had been in their families for generations. The environmentalists, through their support behind a different bill... Submitted in the House by Les O'Coyne and Don Bunker. Their bill prohibits dams and gravel mining in the gorge and forces legal action against developers who violate the gorage plan. O'coyne was confident in February that a compromise between the Senate and House bills was just around the corner. But here it is half a year later and the Northwest delegation has yet to come up with a gorge plan they all can live with. The clock is ticking here on Capitol Hill, and time is running out for the Columbia Gorge. This session will be shortened by the elections in November, prompting some congressmen to rate the chances for passage of a Gorge bill this year at less than 50-50. And if a Gorage bill is passed this session, there's no guarantee the president would sign it. Gorge protection won't be cheap.
