The winding scenic route takes visitors 22 miles over the crest of the Cascade Mountains. The old highway is usually open from early June through early October. Deep snow covers much of the road the rest of the time. The route opened late this season, but the drive is worth the wait. Visitors first climb through old growth stands of Douglas Fir on a series of switchbacks that provide a quick gain in elevation and explain why the road is not suitable for oversized vehicles and trailers. Along the way, travelers pass forested campsites and trailheads that are popular takeoffs for hikers into the Three Sisters and Mount Washington wilderness areas. Stop along the way to sample the scenic vistas or organic tangles of vine maple, fern, blackberry and wildflowers. One alpine clearing features showy displays of flowering bear grass. Near the 5,300-foot summit of Mackenzie Pass, the fir forests give way to rugged lava flows dotted with lodgepole and ponderosa pine. The centerpiece is the D. Wright Observatory, which looks across 65 square miles of lava fields. The flows were created by a series of volcanic eruptions. Some, created as recently as 1,600 years ago, are among the newest in the continental United States. Here, the Lava River Interpretive Trail provides a half-mile loop with signs that explain the geologic phenomena of the area. From the top of the observatory, visitors can survey the panorama of Pine and Pumice.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71297/file/157249#t=149.85,244.63
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71297/file/157249/transcript/88581/annotation/11
Speaker 1: Little Belknap Crater, yeah, I think that's where a lot of this came from.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71297/file/157249#t=245.769,248.45
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71297/file/157249/transcript/88581/annotation/12
Speaker 5: Here, clouds sweep through the pass, whisking their veil across distant peaks. And he says from time to time, he gets inquiries from out-of-state businesses that have read magazine surveys. But how accurate are these studies? Money Magazine says it polled its readers to determine what they consider the most important aspects of a city's quality of life. According to the article, the reporters worked with a computer researcher to gather information from a variety of sources, ranging from a national real estate service to the FBI. But the article indicates that its writers did firsthand reporting in only 11 major cities. With that in mind, here's what Money Magazine told us. According to its survey, the approval rating for the Eugene Springfield economy jumped 10% compared to last year's study. Its approval rating nearly doubled in the category of health services. It continued to give favorable marks to the category of leisure and to this area's housing opportunities. Presumably, Money Magazine was referring to the bargains offered to home buyers from out of state and not to the area's 1% rental vacancy rates. But the survey wasn't all good news. The ratings dropped in the area of education, even though this is a university community with a highly regarded public school system. And its approval rating fell to 6% in the arts category. Despite the fact that a community of this size has its own symphony, opera, ballet, and performing arts center. Like beauty, a city's livability is apparently in the eye of the beholder. The critical factor is the diversity of the economy, and economic observers say Eugene Springfield has made great strides, but still has a long way to go. Comparing large and small cities is an apples and oranges situation, and every survey has its criteria. According to Money Magazine rankings, Portland is number 81. Out of 300. But according to Savvy Woman magazine, Portland is the fourth best city in the United States for raising children.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71297/file/157249#t=2348.49,2470.21
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71297/file/157249/transcript/88581/annotation/119
Speaker 15: The critical thing that savvy and a lot of the magazines gear towards is the Fortune 500 or the huge corporations.
