Trick or treat. I'm going to tell you the tricks and the treats this week in the produce department over in the vegetable department. Locally, we're getting into the fall crop of vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts on the stock headline. Brussels sprouts on the stock, excellent way to buy them. They keep a lot fresher, as low as a dollar a stock for two or three pounds of Brussels sprouts. That's a good deal. Also, local carrots coming in right now, three or three or four pounds, excuse me, for a dollar. Very good buy. Other things happening out of Mexico, Mexican Hickama, about 75 cents a pound. The Mexican sweet potato, very nice, raw in salads or cooked. Over in the fruit department, you know that apples are coming in out of the Pacific Northwest, of all kinds of apples, red delicious, golden, new towns, Gravenstein, Macintosh, Spartans, more than I can even name. Apples are a very good value right now, and they're all crunching, they're all good. Other things out of California, pomegranates. This is the very good pomegranate season, the large pomegranates, they weigh about a pound apiece, running very, very tasty right now. Also, citrus, if you like orange juice, it's a good time to make Valencia orange juice, Valencia oranges near the end of their season, three or four pounds for a dollar. Texas grapefruit coming on right now, a very good buy at four for a dollar, very sweet. Emperor Grapes out of California, 70 cents a pound. Banana markets down finally, 29 to 39 cents a pound for tasty bananas. And last but not least, out of New Zealand, actually out of California now, the kiwi fruit. Kiwi fruit aptly named after the kiwi birds of New Zealand. They're grown in California, they're coming in, this is their season. They run about oh 20 cents apiece, they're very tasty, you don't eat the skin. I suggest you try them for a sweet treat kiwi food. So be kind to all fruits, vegetables, ghosts, and goblins you see this weekend for eyewitness news. I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70650/file/156596#t=1639.83,1735.43
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70650/file/156596/transcript/87543/annotation/95
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70650/file/156596#t=1760.79,1760.79
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70650/file/156596/transcript/87543/annotation/96
Speaker 22: Lloyd Van Sickle loaded his first pack horse when he was just a teenager. Of that total, the Department of Assessment and Taxation would get $137,000, Juvenile Department $110,000, $72,000 for finance and management, and $65,000 to the Land Management Division of Public Works. In making the recommendation, Icky said the four-day workweek was taking its toll in county government through illness and low morale. And he said the county could only benefit by elimination of the furlough, which has been in effect more than a year. The rest of the ONC Windfall would restore mandated services in several departments, add to the county's self-insurance fund, and place $184,000 in reserve funds. In mandated services, the Department of Public Safety will be the biggest benefactor, with $305,000 targeted for restoration of limited rural sheriff's patrols. That money will pay for 13 additional positions for the sheriff, including one deputy shift, five days a week for emergency response, and resident deputies in Oak Ridge, Florence, and Blue River. You bet. There's a couple of times in Oregon when you can catch a 40-pound fish on a fly. One of them is in the spring when the stripers in the lower Umqua and the Smith. I fish for fish that are over 40 pounds with a fly. The other time is this time of the year when the fall Chinook are coming in. They begin to congregate in the lower rivers, you get to them with a fly. Now don't think you can go out there with your typical light trout rod and catch a chinook. You can't do it. It's just not enough tackle. You can go by and to your local tackle shop and they'll tell you what you need. You're going to need at least a 10-weight rod, a reel with a brake on it, maybe a single action reel that doesn't turn backwards and crack your knuckles when you hook a big fish. You're going to need a different kind of line. Fish Chinook live right on the bottom. You've got to use high density or lead core line to get right down there to them. The flies, not what you'd think. You'd think you'd need a big fly as big as a herring, but you don't use size sixes and eights and ten flies, small flies for salmon. Don't forget, if you get out there on a river and hook one of these fish, it never hurts to turn one loose. You don't have to kill all the fish you catch. And anytime you release a fish, you haven't hurt the fishery. This weekend is going to be the last weekend of deer, general deer blacktail season in western Oregon.
