Lleuellyn's a Eugene City Councilor who earns his living as a bicycle mechanic. Hale works for Santa Clara Real Estate Agency and has run for Commissioner once before. Llerellyn's strongest support is in Eugene's Westside and Whitaker neighborhoods, while Hale depends on the River Road and Bethel-Dana Bo areas. Both agree that employment is the key issue in the campaign, but they differ on how to achieve that goal. Llewellyn emphasizes aid to local small businesses and the retraining of local workers. Hale wants a strong commitment to making sites available for industry, both local and from outside the area. Llewellyn believes there's enough industrial land in the metro area plan, while Hale thinks we need more large sites. Llewelyn is absolutely against including any of the industrial triangle in the area's urban growth boundary, while Haile would include the southern part. Both say they support state land use planning laws. And they agree that Lane County's rural land use plan has flaws. Llewellyn opposes a county sewer district for the River Road Santa Clara area. Hale supports that as an alternative to annexation. Llewellyn would only support annexation if the city of Eugene was ready to provide sewers. Llewelyn favors public funding for low income abortions, while Hale opposes any public funds for that purpose. They both support a local ordinance restricting radioactive waste shipments and the use of herbicides. But Hale opposes an outright ban on sprays. And they both favor stronger local measures to foster energy conservation. In fact, it's been so cold, I expect it to freeze one of these nights soon. What this means to us is our local fruit and vegetable season is drawing to an end. We'll be paying higher prices soon for out-of-state produce. First, let's take a look at the vegetable market. Locally, we're still getting some zucchini and yellow squash, carrots, all very reasonably priced. Red bell peppers, which, incidentally, are the highest source of vitamin C, coming locally and very reasonably Christ also. Acorn squash, a very good buy this week, as low as $0.10 a pound. Sweet corn, cauliflower is still coming in good. And lettuce is starting to come in good again. Cabbage also, prices will be escalating on this soon, as the local supplies start to dwindle. The high price item this week. California tomatoes, as high as $80 to $90 a pound, if you can get some local tomatoes, they're going to be scarce soon. Get them, because the California ones are going to set you back. Turning to the local fruit market. We're getting a beautiful array of apples coming in now. Jonathan's, Gravenstein's, Red, Golden Delicious, Newtown's, all starting to come in now, all very reasonably priced, except for the Newtowns. They're a little high, but they will be coming down. Very good quality. Out of California, pomegranate season is just starting. The prices are high on the pomegrants now. They will be come down. Nearing the end of grape season, but grapes are a good buy right now. All varieties, these seedless, as low as sixty to seventy cents a pound. Very good quality. Finally, the esthetic fruit of the week this week are these red Bartlett pears out of Southern Oregon. These red Bartlett's taste very much like Bartlett, the regular Bartlett except they're red, have a little bit more color, a little different flavor, and they're a very beautiful pear.
