And you know, to just have that missing for so much and for so long has not only impacted my father, me and my brother, you know? 4 00:00:45,000 --> 00:01:00,000 And I didn’t want that to impact my son in the same way. So really, joining this community, a big impetus is really my son and helping him understand all of who he is and all of his missing pieces so he doesn’t have that,
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2404/collection_resources/125829/file/239555#t=15.0,30.0
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2404/collection_resources/125829/file/239555/transcript/66466/annotation/3
so we can weave a new tapestry for our family. And so it is just kind of like piece by piece stitching this tapestry. And Tekina-eiru has not only been such a powerful elder and leader in our community, 6 00:01:15,000 --> 00:01:30,000 bringing folks together with no judgement, with no expectation of coming in and knowing how to be in ceremony, but as a gentle teacher and as someone who is willing 7 00:01:30,000 --> 00:01:45,000 to share the knowledge that she has gained from so many, and to carry that forward. And so it’s just been this process that’s been so powerful and so remarkable not only for me but also for my son to be a part of. 8 00:01:45,000 --> 00:02:00,000 A particularly significant event and ceremony that we had was a naming ceremony for my son. Traditionally my father would have been a part of a naming ceremony, myself and my brother would have also been a part of the native 9 00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:15,000 ceremony where we had a Potowotami name, and this didn’t happen for us. Tekina-eiru when we first had our very first ceremony for the Yara (ph), she made sure to ask 10 00:02:15,000 --> 00:02:30,000 if my son wanted to have a naming ceremony during this. And that was something I’ve learned I guess along the way about this healing process is that you don’t really necessarily know what all has been stolen from you until you regain it 11 00:02:30,000 --> 00:02:45,000 and reclaim it. And so to have my father who couldn’t be here, because he lives in Arkansas, be able to give this name, Soaring Eagle, to share with Tekina-eiru, to be able to have this ceremony together, 12 00:02:45,000 --> 00:03:00,000 and with also my son’s father who is not native and also learning and embracing these cultural celebrations and traditions, was just meaningful beyond words for us. And so that’s just one example of that healing 13 00:03:00,000 --> 00:03:15,000 process for us, for our family, and even for my father who’s not here physically, but that meant so much to him to have that important ceremonial tradition that we just have not had access to.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2404/collection_resources/125829/file/239555#t=60.0,75.0"}]}]}]}
