But as of this afternoon, the public defender's office is no longer on the case. Eyewitness News has now confirmed that Nick's father, who lives in Long Island, New York, has hired the prominent Eugene defense attorney, Ken Morrow, to represent his son in court. Morrow is out of town until Tuesday. The defendant's mother confirmed by telephone today that the family has hired Morrow. Pat Nick says the family lives very far away and they don't know the Eugene area. She said Ken Morrow was highly recommended and they want, quote, to do the best they can for their child. Lane County District Attorney Doug Harkle-Road has also been told the family has retained private counsel to defend Nick. However, he cautions that no formal documents naming Morrow as a defense counsel have yet been filed with the court. In any event, Nick's preliminary hearing on the two murder charges, originally scheduled for this coming Tuesday, has now been postponed for two weeks. Harkleroad says the postponement is a combination of the change in counsel for the defense and the fact that his office will be presenting evidence to a grand jury this coming week. Nick is accused of killing 61-year-old Edmund Murphy and 60-year old Frank Rizel one week ago tonight. Both men were bludgeoned to death within a short period of time. Yesterday, I swore I could have put a wetsuit on and went swimming in my backyard. That's just to show you how drastic the weather has changed in the last couple of weeks. What does that mean to us, fresh produce eaters? Well, over in the fruit department, peaches and nectarines, well, we can just about say goodbye to them. They're just about all finished up. Other local things, though, are starting to come on. Fall fruit, apples, red delicious, golden delicious, very reasonably priced. We told you about a bumper crop of Bartlett pears coming on. Also, plums, Brooks prune plums. President prune plum's coming on right now. Also very reasonably priced. Out of California, grapes. Grapes have been around all summer long. We're getting into storage grapes now. There'll be some good prices on grapes, but there's gonna be lots of shattering in the grapes, meaning the grapes are falling off of the stems because they've been in storage. Also out of California. Melons, honeydew and cantaloupe are experiencing a very good second season. Very reasonable prices on them. What's high priced in fruit this week? Surprisingly enough, bananas running about 49 to 59 cents a pound, mainly because there's no other soft fruit on the market. Over in the vegetable department, what's happening? Well, these cool, crisp nights are spelling death notes for tomatoes. They don't like the wetness, and it causes a lot of cracking and a lot soft spots on the tomatoes. What looked like was a promising tomato crop is just about over. There are still some local tomatoes. Other things coming in, just about the end of green bean season. Just about the end of corn season. Broccoli's coming on, cauliflower, a nice fall vegetable coming on. We are seeing some other new fall vegetables coming on locally. Leeks, how about some leek and potato soup, very nice for a cool evening, and also all the winter squash, be it spaghetti, butternut, or danish. So there's a lot of squash, and the vegetables and fruits are really beginning to change seasons right now. There's some good values and some good quality, so make sure you eat lots of fresh produce this week. For eyewitness news, I'm Terry Potassium. Yeah.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71023/file/156974#t=1657.58,1778.28
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71023/file/156974/transcript/88459/annotation/88
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71023/file/156974#t=1891.43,1893.27
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71023/file/156974/transcript/88459/annotation/89
Speaker 24: It was early Saturday morning, 4 a.m. When we headed out. We boarded a ship like no other on the planet, a vessel only two years old, but part of a legend much older. Morning came, the clouds got lighter. The Columbia River seemed more familiar, but the ship kept its mystery. There are some things not shrouded in romanticism on board, some things just the subject of curiosity. These tall stacks, for instance, provide the power here. They are aluminum sails, more like wings. A wing will move through the air, creating low pressure above it, high pressure below. The result? It lifts. It flies. Now these tubes are like wings, but instead of being horizontal, like that, they're vertical, like that. They move the ship along the surface of the water. So like a wing, instead of going up, they move along like this. But they don't do that without a lot of electronic help. Other sailboats rely on human guesswork and human muscles to decide what angle the should be. The Alcyon relies on computers and sensors.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71023/file/156974#t=1919.7,1977.29
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71023/file/156974/transcript/88459/annotation/90
Speaker 25: When we are in automatic mode, the computer manages everything.
