In a March federal indictment against alleged drug producer, Danny Lee Aldrich, federal authorities said they would seek forfeiture of profits of any financial interest Aldrich had in a ranch on Hillaire Street. Ex-Deputy Fernandez has told members of his union he has committed no crime. They told us the suspected drug kingpin Aldrich was a well-known figure at Lane County jail. And it would not be unusual for Fernandez to know his name. Fernandez has since hired a lawyer and has been unavailable for future comment. It was Aldrich that police arrested following a fiery explosion in a barn near Junction City in October of last year. At the time, police believed they had seen a methamphetamine lab go up in flames. They also found the charred remains of a number of machine guns, an increasingly common trademark of drug professionals operating in rural Oregon. In a subsequent federal indictment, authorities alleged Aldrich compiled a short list of people with which to conspire to make methamphetamine. On the long list was the name of former Deputy Fernandez, according to the document. Fernandez has so far not been charged with any crime, but it appears the Sheriff's Department is trying to connect the two men in criminal activity. When asked directly today if that was the case, Sheriff Dave Burks told us by phone quote, it would be logical to draw that conclusion. In.
