An aggravated-murder conviction carries a minimum 20- year mandatory sentence. Both had attorneys who had represented them in the past by their sides, but both will get court-appointed attorneys for their upcoming murder trial. A motion was filed on behalf of Jack Freeman that seeks to force the District Attorney's Office to release evidence pertaining to the case, including any tape recorded statements or videotaped reenactments. The Springfield police did conduct a reenactment of the crime following the Freeman's arrest. After the arraignment, the two brothers were brought back to the Lane County Jail where they're being held without bail. Donnie and Jack Freeman were both born in California. Police sources say they're unsure when they moved to Lane County. The Freeman's father, Robert, still lives in Eugene and is a city employee. Police know little about the Freeman's mother, but they say the two young men appear to have been close to their father's second wife, Pat Freeman. They've been divorced for some time now. The two boys moved back and forth between their father and their stepmother at different times during their adolescence. Jack, who was married four months ago, attended both Willamette and Springfield High Schools. He did get a degree. The younger brother, Donnie, also attended Springfield high school for a time. The stepmother, Pat, who lives right behind the Springfield Dairy Mart, told police that her two step-sons had been over the night of the murder. That prompted police to call the two in for questioning. Police say she's deeply shocked by both the murder and her step-son's arrest. Meanwhile, the search for evidence took divers from the Lane County search and rescue team to a pond next to Highway 99. It was the second day divers had been at work in the pond, which is near the house on Jessen Street where the Freemans were living at the time of their arrest. What that means is that 75% of Oregon taxpayers will pay the same or more under the new system. A couple filing jointly for instance with a $21,000 gross annual income might pay up to $75 more depending on their exemptions. One unemployment figure went up, another went down. The raw unemployment figure, that is the total number of people out of work, climbed 12.7 percent in January. That was nearly a full percent jump since December. And it means that a record 165,700 Oregonians are out of work or about equal to the population of the entire Eugene Springfield metropolitan area. The seasonally adjusted rate, however, declined from 11.5% to 11%. That was the first drop since last summer. Why the difference? Well, December is traditionally a time when a lot of people have jobs due to holiday sales. January and February are traditionally down periods. The seasonal adjustment takes into account that many people simply stop looking for work or they wait for the next seasonal job. So fewer people were working, but the rate of unemployment increased more slowly than expected. Retail and wholesale sectors were hit the hardest, with the construction industry not far behind. Those rates fell even though the sales and building trades had dismal decimbers. And the lumber and wood products industries are still reeling from high interest rates. Only 54,500 people had timber-related jobs. That's the lowest January level since 1950. Employment Director Thorn says that things will get worse before they get better. For about $6, a horse-drawn carriage will tour you about the quarter, and the running history lesson from the guide It is most informative. Officials thought they had the problem licked, but there was more trouble ahead. As an indirect result of the power failure, the primary settling tank got jammed, keeping the treatment plant out of operation. Now all sewage is flowing through that main plant, but it's only being treated with chlorine. It could be 48 hours before the necessary repairs are completed. Until then, 15 million gallons of partially treated sewage will flow into the river per day. A Department of Environmental Quality spokesman says the situation is serious. But says no major health hazards are expected. That's because the Willamette River is running high enough to dilute the waste. However, he warns that people immediately downstream from the spill should avoid contact with the river.
