And in the house. Oh, I'm sure. I can feel an emotional mood in this direction, and I'm sure that it's going to be raised again. I could just feel it, and I keep hearing this sort of rumbling. Any idea of the outcome? I'm sure it'll be closer than it was last time. Extremely tight very very tight the professional services, which would include the use of facilities, the counseling that takes place at the time of making the service, putting together the arrangements in regard to the documents that have to be filed, the statistics that are taken, and this type of thing, and also including the staff that's involved in carrying out a funeral service and the actual physical plan itself. Then also listing the cost of the casket as an item separated from the professional services and then other items of service such as vaults, maybe clothing and this type of thing that could be involved in the service as well as transportation to the cemetery. Basically, most of them have gone on record of being in favor of our Disclosure Act. There are those that feel like being restricted is not in the public interest, and more rules and regulations make it harder to deal with the public. I mean, I think that's the main argument. I don't think those that are arguing against the proposal are saying, no, we don't want to disclose our charges. At least this would be my hope. So I think that there has been some publicity. Where it's saying that funeral directors are opposed to showing their costs. I really don't think that that's true and I don't think that, I think in the public interest, most funeral directors do want to make the public aware of what's involved and what the costs are. I think number one, we'd like our players to have a good time and to have a very fine educational experience to go to another country and hear some other people's viewpoints on not just basketball but other important topics I think will help them grow up. I think secondly we improve as a team we should improve our skills by playing together for 20 games and I think finally we become a little closer as a a team. We pride ourselves on our closeness but traveling and suffering and enjoying five weeks on the road has to help us towards a little closer unity, I think Well, during the summer months, we had a teenage girl in the neighborhood come in and stay with her every day. And we left about 7.30 in the morning. She was in our home, available in case of emergencies, to take phone calls and to prepare my daughter a hot lunch. How has the minimum wage revision changed this for you? Well, we've had to make other arrangements. We told the sitter that I did some checking, and we found out that it applied to her. So we couldn't afford to have her come into our home. How much would it have cost you? At $1.90 an hour, with overtime of 40 hours in a week, it adds up to about $470 a month. Does your daughter get as good care as she had before? Well, I would say not quite as good. She's out of her home surroundings, and the lunches are not hot lunches. They're sandwiches whenever the girls feel like fixing something. And so her nutrition is not as good, she's away from her familiar surroundings and her usual neighborhood. So I have a little more concern, yes, for her having to leave home. We do not have sufficient resources at the present time to properly man the police department. That has been the subject of news releases on my part earlier and I have stated that all along and will continue to state it. We are sadly short on manpower, have been for a considerable period of time. The averages as far as manpower per population ratio is much lower in Springfield than it is in neighboring cities, or for that matter, pretty much anywhere else in the state of Oregon. The per capita cost for law enforcement support in this city is lower than it does in surrounding cities. It's all a matter of record, including the per thousand-evaluation taxation that this city taxes itself at. It's no secret. However, these factors, these things that we both know are not the reason for my leaving. At this time, no, and that's a question I can't answer. I have no intentions at this time. But you're not trying to move closer to that position with that intention in mind. That's a question I can't answer. I have never given it any thought until you raised the issue. Never entered my mind. We're proposing a two-level fee. One would be a dollar charge for a maximum of two garbage cans. And the other amount would be $2, which would be in excess of the two garbage cans for either a pickup or for a car that would be hauling a trailer. Real commercial garbage haulers have to increase their prices if this user's fee is instituted. Yes, very substantially. We're estimating a four to five times the current fee, which ranges anywhere from $3 to $6 a load. I believe the highest amount that would be charged for compacted loads is about $35. Again, this would probably have to be passed on to the consumer. See you next time. I'm going to get the black just a second place once again. On behalf of the Eugene JCs, I'd like to read this. Basically, the wording is identical, except that it doesn't say school, even though he is connected with the University of Oregon. United States JCs certified that David Cronweyer was a recipient of which he made a great contribution to his community, state, and nation. On behalf the Eugene JCs, our sincere congratulations. Thank you very much. We will ask for your help. In these various organizations just to see really what's going on. And every year I think that you'll agree this year that our winner is exceptional. It was impossible. Drug manufacturers who say their product treats the blahs or the queasy feeling will have to be more specific in the future. And the labels must indicate any possible problems with the product. What it all boils down to is that the consumer will be able to make a more intelligent selection of the over-the-counter products. In Eugene Ben-Vranis for Action News. Well, the ten people that are the ten complaints that were issued against these people, obviously that is indicative of some type of fraud that is taking place. There is a much larger issue, I think, that must be addressed by the people of this community, and that is the sufficiency of the entire food stamp program and whether or not it should be continued. And if it is continued, what type of changes, I feel, must take place in that program if it is going to continue. In fairness to the federal audit, I do want to wait until he has presented to me his findings. But after that has taken place, I feel that there should be some public discussion and debate about this issue because it affects all of the taxpayers in this community. With the heavy snowfall we've had in the mountains past winter and its retention, any real rapid melt is going to cause some flooding of our lowlands and provide excellent breeding areas for mosquitoes. Plus the fact that we've have heavy rains through the year causing the water table to remain high, the ground is saturated, and the water does not disappear during rain, keeps ponding, leaving us a real potential for a real brood to hatch off this year. What methods are used to keep an eye out for trouble spots in the mosquito population? We generally know from past experience where the trouble spots are and will be. We depend very much on individuals calling in complaints. We have full crews during the summer months that do check these spots for larvae, and when we find them, we go ahead and treat. I think that will be fine. I need to see it first. Hi, how are you today? Well, we are concerned because if it goes on for any length of time, we feel that the price of clothing will just skyrocket on us. So that's how the strike will affect the consumer? Eventually it will, yes. We hope they'll settle it just as soon as possible. Yes, did you have any reason to anticipate the strike? We did several months ago, right after Christmas time, we knew there would be an increase and we anticipated approximately a 10% increase in clothing at that time. And we already built this into our retail price, which would come effective this fall. But since they're going out on strike, we don't know what's going to happen. The major complaints is it's a tacky-looking lot. Basically, they need, they may emphasize the fire hazard, but at this time of the year, there's doggone little that's going to burn. But I think primarily esthetics is the prime motivator for complaints. Mr. Stewart, why are you charging more for your services this sh- Well, this year we're charging $25, whereas last year we charged $15. And the reasons are multifold. Part of them is for the city to be able to recapture their total cost of administering this program. Another is to put enough of a pad in there to make an inducement to an owner to pick up the phone and hire these very same people. There's many men contract cutting in the market. And they can make a substantial savings if they'll just make the effort to grab that phone and make their own arrangements. The city wants out of the weed cutting business. You bet your boots. We've added a chapter on growth, a chapter on citizen participation, a chapter on energy and earth resources. And those are really the principal differences. What would you say is the major impact that the community goals will have on Eugene? They're a starting point for a lot of things. The last community goals session resulted in the joint housing committee, which in effect resulted in a homeowner and renter property tax refund program, so it can spread pretty far. It isn't immediately obvious what the impact is going to be. Do you think that this study and formulation of community goals will result in anything specific like that? Not really, the emphasis on citizen participation in neighborhood organization is one that will probably be felt quite a great deal. And the proposal to create a committee to really look into the issue of growth, whether we can slow the rate of growth and still retain economic viability is one that was the source of a great of discussion, a great a deal of support. Well I think Larry it was naturally disappointing and the turnout of course is rather distressing. I think the most important thing that came home to me was the fact that here six percent of the people of this city are actually actually telling the other 94 percent how the city shall be run for the coming year. Of course we anticipate another election and one which will carry I hope a budget very similar to this one because It is a maintenance level budget and not one that is based on anticipated needs. Would you recommend resubmitting the same budget? Essentially the same. I think perhaps a few little trimmings could be done here and there, but because this is a very basic budget, I think it has to be resubmitted. A rear door leading into the residence was unlocked. The interior of the residence does not look to be out of the ordinary, with the exception that there are apparently two bedrooms, and each bedroom has twin beds. And three of the beds appear to have been slept in. We're concerned that there could be a potential of a hostage and... And a person being taken from the area by Mr. Boll. Well, I believe so. Yes, I do. Why do you think so? Because he has made a mistake. Do you think it's serious enough for him to resign? Well, I think it should be left up to him. He should step forward and make the decision. Yes, I do. Any time a convicted murderer would be released on a four-hour pass, especially something that was very evident of murdering a deputy sheriff, I don't think he should have had a pass at all. How do you feel that way? Well, I don't think he did a fair job of letting him out without permission. I would just say to see his record go down the drain that perhaps he should stay on the job. Yes, I guess that's what I'm trying to say. Do you think that CUP should resign? Yes, I think that he should. Any reason for feeling this way? Well, to set an example, maybe more than anything, I think that it might be better if he resigned before he was dismissed by someone else. Might be a stupid setting, but it places up the point that I'm here in the middle of what is commonly called a hay field, or where pollen is really abundant. All of the ingredients are here. We've got the wind blowing, you've got the flowers in bloom, the whole thing. So you sneeze, your eyes water, like mine have been doing the last few days, and you become more and more miserable. Dave Gamma at the Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority is in touch with the Portland Medical Center on the whole hay fever problem here in Willamette Valley. He says it seems to be running worse this year than the past years although he said 1972 was a pretty tough year. Said this runs about the same if not a little worse. More phone calls, more complaints. He refers them to the Portland Medical Center but he does tell me these things. The pollen season runs the heaviest in late May to early July here in the Willamette Valley, the Eugene Springfield area. As the combination of the smoke and the flowers and everything blooms, your nose starts to itch, your eyes water, you start to sneeze, and things get continually worse. Of course, the drier and the windier it is, the worse the hay fever gets. So if these clouds materialize tonight, like Fred Paddle says they might, and it should rain for the next couple days, it's going to keep the pollen count down so the rest of us can get a little relief from this continual battle with hay fever. Two things to note, take note. Dave Gemma says the two peak periods of the early summer, late spring hay fever season are the Memorial Day weekend and the 4th of July. If you got by the Memorial day weekend, the fourth is coming, he says that one is the worst. That one is when the pollen's really in the air, and that's when you really start to feel it. Of course, you can get relief at the beach. The ocean, you know, is always talked about as being a place where you can clean out your sinuses. You can go over to Eastern Oregon, where the pollen count is down a little bit. You'll probably still have a little hay fever down there. But I think the main thing that you've got to realize now is that the season's almost over with. And if you could stick her out through mid-July. Thank you very much. You'll be doing all right. You can coast in for the rest of the summer. By the way, the Willamette Valley and the Eugene Springfield area, according to the Layton Regional Air Pollution Authority, does not have ragweed. Marty Douglas for Action News. The outlying areas. I just want it with you being, like, governmental offices in City Hall. It'll it'll be both. I'm going to get out Every Friday from 10 o'clock until noon starting next week I will hold open office hours to meet with any member of the public who would like to make a suggestion Ask a question or deliver a criticism to me personally And third, once a month, starting next, or starting last week of this month, I will take my office to one of the many cities or rural communities of Lane County outside the immediate metro area, so that the citizens of these smaller outlying communities will have the same accessibility to our office as those who live in the city. Stadium has the tendency to look like a massive arc in the middle of the sea during the rainy season in Eugene. Well the University of Oregon and Lane County has finally decided to do something about it. They're going to fill the low spots to build the parking lot up to a level where it will drain properly. Action News asked surveyor Larry Olson how much fill and how long it will take to build a parking lot to elevation. We have taken measurements at the site, and looking at the drainage plan we have presently proposed, it'll take about a half a million cubic yards of material. With the material around the area, how long do you anticipate this will take to fill? I understand that the urban renewal people indicated that there would be approximately 6,000 cubic yards of material generated per year through demolition. If you look at this on a half a million cubic yard need, we're looking at an 80-year program. However, we anticipate sewer construction, street construction, and other type of construction, which would generate a non-organic material that we can place in there. How long you hope it will take. Hopefully within four or five years. County officials have assured us that the waste material going in here will be of the non-organic type. This means that the water table and the water in the surrounding area will not be affected or polluted. At Autzen Stadium, this is George Shortus reporting for Action News. As long as it's calling for Jim Oversocker. All right. Gail James. Yes, and when Mr. Overstocker comes in, have him call Mr. James at 8-7, 3-2. Mike, are people still surprised to hear a male voice when they call the operator? All the time. They're always calling in and giving us nice comments. And they're like, oh my god, it's a man. And they don't believe it. That is me. And I like to think I'm a girl with a deep voice or something. It's really strange. Thank you very much. When you applied for this job, did you apply specifically to be an operator? Yes, I applied when I was in high school and there was a counseling, through the counseling system and they said that it was for male operators or just being an operator and I thought it would be interesting so I applied for the job. Has it been interesting? Really, it's been more interesting than a lot of jobs I had in the past. You know, you meet a lot of nice people and you have nice bosses and like I say the customers, you don't know what's going on and you pick up a, you know, a person, a customer, it was really strange. Come on Yes. And have it. Oh, and operator, have Mr. Oversocker F-operator number six, I mean seven when he calls back. Seven. Mike and the other male telephone operators I spoke to said they really enjoy their work. Speaking on the telephone for eight hours a day to people has its unique moments. Mike's only complaint is that 50 percent of the callers, through force of habit, conclude their business with, Thank you ma'am.
