They are locked up according to statutes for public service purposes. The only way we can release those is if we decide that there is no need for a public service buildings and this is still the position of county council. And I'm not a lawyer and I'll have to agree with you until unless we get a new lawyer. Hold on, I'm going to get you in here. Pardon. Understand the implications of the issue of a changed board of commissioners then I have some sympathy with what he's trying to do but as for me I guess maybe I I'm going to propose some kind of action that the board can take to protest the field burning that took place during the time when we were having an air alert. If it is legal, and I don't have an illegal opinion on that, but if it is legal for. To take place during the time when this community is having an air alert, then certainly that's a loophole in the law that needs to, for any kind of open burning to take place during a time when one is having a air alert is a loop hole in the lot that ought to be plugged. Well the reason we need it right away is so we can get this program off the ground without having to go back to the business community asking for donations to buy the uniforms and equipment necessary to operate the program. It took 20 years to develop a boys EBAA program. Why do you think you can get an equal program for girls? In two? Well, the boys program started on a very small scale. At that time we didn't know what the interest would be. We have conducted surveys and girls sports participation is now a big thing. The high schools are getting into it, the recreation departments all over the country are getting in to it and so girls want to play. They've wanted an opportunity to compete and I think that people I've talked to we find it in most cases that A higher percentage of girls participate in competitive athletics than boys. So this is the reason I think that just the interest here in the community is... Depends a lot on public interest. We would like to have plants and trees from around the world to symbolize international understanding, cooperation. Within an arboretum there usually is of course an administrative building, a learning center, library type thing. There are usually green houses, glass houses, this sort of thing. In our particular arboretum, we hope that someday there might be a replica of the Chinju sister city pavilion, a teahouse. We're talking about this large area in here, which is more or less a large valley on the Mount Pisgah side. How many acres does it involve? Are you talking about the entire mouth? No, the Arboretum site. I would say that this is approximately 300 to 400 acres. Then you might take... What percentage are you experiencing in Oregon? Well, at the present time, the default experience with vocational school students, these are proprietary school students, is around 7%. Our overall default rate across the state is around 3.6% for the total program. And the vocational schools students do run higher than those students attending the two- and four-year public nonprofit institutions. Thank you very much. What would be? I know, I just don't, right? What are the responsibilities of the strong side linebacker? Well against Utah, it's a probability to stop the dive back and then help on the pitch back if and when the play develops outside and that's mostly it against Utah against other teams that run different formations who have different responsibilities. Does it change every game? Not really, but in some cases it does change dramatically when teams run like counters and plays that are designed to actually have you go in one direction and cut back on you. Then your responsibilities change. Would you believe a seven-story county jail facility? Well, Steve Hesselschwerd and Jerry Hoffman think the College Inn has better possibilities of being converted to a jail than any other building they've seen in the United States. Hesselsschwerd Hoffman are federal representatives who recommend the county take the option to buy the College inn. The owners are asking $1.6 million for the buildings, the property, and the furnishings. At a special board meeting last night the commissioners were told the building is spacious, architecturally pleasing, and should have at least a 50-year lifespan. They're advised to hire a correctional consultant and an architect immediately to begin planning the transition. The county estimates it will take two years to renovate the building. I asked some of the students how they felt about being put out into the streets next summer. It really bothers me a lot because I've found it really hard to find some place to live here. Yeah The dorms were so small, and the fraternities were something that I didn't want to get into. And so I finally found this, and now where do I go tomorrow? Uh... You think there will there be housing available if they do move you out here next summer Not really. It's so crowded right now there's waiting lists for the dorms and the fraternities are hard to get into and I love it here. How do you feel about being moved out of your building? I don't understand how can they put people in a building that there is no area around it. It's completely community life around it, there's nowhere to rehabilitate them, and there's nothing. Are you going to have a hard or an easy time finding housing? Have a really difficult time finding another place to live. My parents have this thing about apartments and I don't know what I'd do if I got out to... The commissioners have until December 12th to withdraw their option. If they decide to use the building, a substantial down payment will have to be made in February. Where those funds will come from is still anyone's guess, including the commissioners. For Action News, this is George Shortus reporting. Because of the narrow margin of vote, we feel that with as many voters as turned out for the voting, that there could be a possibility of error. We just want to double check it. Now are you supporters of the school budget or are you opposed to the school budget? We were, we were opposed to it. You have four precincts right now that are being recounted tomorrow. How many more precinct are you going to aim for? Yesterday I filed for four additional precincts and with the contributions now coming in we should be able to file for the remaining balance. For the entire Eugene District 4-J. Yes. If the vote went the other way, if the budget failed by 144 votes, would you be urging a recount? Thank you. I don't know if I would or not, but I'm sure the yes voters would be. Thank you. Yes, the change is that the legislature meet early in January as usual, take up only for final action only bills that have to do with appropriations for state agencies and for one year only, that other bills would be introduced and referred to committee and that the legislature then recess as provided for by the Constitution, that the interim committees work during the recess and when their work is done they come back without and vote on the on the bills themselves in floor sessions. Right now we interrupt committee work with floor sessions and floor sessions interrupted by committee work and by doing it that way we can work out a much better schedule for a citizen legislature in staggering their workload. You're not from Oregon, are you from Oregon? I'd like you to have one of my brochures. I want it for the governor. What's your name? Joy, essentially. Where do you live? I'm from West Virginia. Hi, how's it going? Are you from Origen? Appreciate your help very much. Why don't they close the door on you? Where are you from? I appreciate your help. OK. I'm here. Thank you. I don't want to waste these on people from the California. How are you? Good, how are you? I met you before, didn't I? No, I just got here. Oh, I'm Bob Strahl, Governor. Where are you from? Right here. Good, appreciate your help very much. I've been here for about five years now. Yes, I think this is the right role for him to play. I'm very happy that he's not supporting my Republican opponent, which would be his natural bent. I feel that the endorsement of the governor in my race wouldn't be too helpful. People of Oregon want a candidate to stand on his own feet and run on his record and his own program, and of course this is what I intend to do. You know, I have a wrench on the bleeder. Appreciate your help very much. What are you going to major in here? Are you new here? Good luck. How are you, sir? This oat nematode thing is something new, I'm really not too familiar with it, news releases just come out on the problem. As far as the wheat smut is concerned, we don't have too much here in the Willamette Valley. We do have a little bit of smut, but our wheat problems are quite minimal as compared with some other areas. How much oat and wheat are there in the Willamette Valley in Lane County? Here in Lane County, our wheat production has gone up tremendously. Last year we had around 5,000 to 6,000 acres. This year we have, I estimate, around 18,000 acres of wheat which has been grown. A lot of this has been taken out of, put into wheat from other crops, such as beans, which have been low producing and low pay. The wheat increase certainly is quite substantial this year. Oats, we probably have around 2,500 acres of oats here in Lane county. This season for the. I think the mayor's comments were most effective. I think that the first thing that happens to you when the smoke rolls in is that you begin to have a dull headache and then your eyes begin to burn and then it affects the nasal passages and this is something that all of us are enduring right now. I had been staying out at a little cottage we have out in the country about thirty miles out and towards Markola. When I drove into town last night, it was like driving into hell. The smoke was so thick, I had to turn the lights on in the car. The traffic was heavy at that hour. And it was, it was like driving in to the clouds of the inferno. I think when he comes up with statements, such as he recently made, concerning our lack of concern about this and the fact that our priorities are in wrong order... Makes the public very unhappy about what's going on. And I think we've carried the public along very well. And this is shown in the questionnaire we had so that they understand what Corrections is all about. And with this buildup of their support, I'd hate to lose it. And we can, if we don't work together and cooperate to work it out, rather than picking at each other. Whether it's politically motivated or whatever the motivation is. What do you think his motivations are, particularly? Well, I think it's political. In what way. Well, I think he would like to see me replaced so he'd have a stronger voice on the Board of County Commissioners. Thank you very much. I think he's pushing his strong campaign supporter, Mr. Weinstein. While not wanting to separate the issues and discuss them individually, we feel that there's been a good deal of misinformation available or a lack of information available on on kindergartens and people aren't certain what the intent of the the legislature was and our feeling was that we should try to get the opinion of the house education committee and make it available to the community at this time. We don't want to lose sight though of the entire budget because we're here to support that. I am serious about wanting to debate with my opponent. I wanted to debate the Senator Morris when he was still alive, and I would like to debate with Mrs. Roberts. I'm disappointed that during this congressional recess, she was unwilling to accept a variety of debates that we had offered around the state, including one last night in Eugene sponsored by a coalition of conservation groups, and that's a subject that both Mrs. Roberts and I are quite interested in. Consequently, we have again... Offered her a series of specific dates, including one in Eugene, where we would like to meet face-to-face live debates, and I'm asking her to accept or reject at least most of these so that her schedule and mine can be set. I still have about a month of congressional business that requires my attention, and i'm just hoping that we won't have to have any dallying and dodging back and forth and that she will indeed accept some of these offers to debate. And he should not be granted immunity by President Ford, and he simply ought to have to take his licks with anybody else if he's guilty. Should he be prosecuted? That's up to Jaworski. Or it's up some US. Your lawyer should be prosecute. If the evidence is there to prosecute him, I'm not going to say any that he should or that he shouldn't. I would not grant him immunity. If he's guilt, he should be prosecuting. If Jaworsky's got enough evidence to indict him. Thinks that he can take that trial to conviction, he ought to do it. Sure, if you take a look at this community across the board, you'll find that the lion's share of low-cost housing, cheap, inexpensive housing, lived in by presumably people of relatively low income, the lion share of that housing is not subsidized. A very small portion of it's subsidized The dispersal policy that we've been given deals only with subsidized housing. And that is a pretty serious error in that. It leads one to the opposite set of conclusions that one would arrive at if they looked at the whole issue of low-cost housing and not just subsidized housing.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69658/file/156071#t=52.31,1809.84"}]},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69658/file/156071/transcript/86169","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["English [Transcript]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69658/file/156071/transcript/86169/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"subtitling","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/086/169/original/trint_Coll427_fvm08_transcript.vtt?1762203595","format":"text/vtt","language":"en"},"target":"https://d9jk7wjtjpu5g.cloudfront.net/file_transcripts/associated_files/000/086/169/original/trint_Coll427_fvm08_transcript.vtt?1762203595"}]},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69658/file/156071/index/51379","type":"AnnotationPage","label":{"en":["Coll427_FVm08 [Index]"]},"items":[{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69658/file/156071/index/51379/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"coll427_fvm08_01","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69658/file/156071#t=0.0,84.0"},{"id":"https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69658/file/156071/index/51379/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Exterior handheld camera views of The College Inn student residence at 1000 Patterson Street.
