This is Stanford University in Palo Alto, where they like to think the term student athlete has more meaning than some other places. Now, I'm not sure that's really the case. We don't get a look at these guys' transcripts. We only see them on the practice field. But what we see is a pretty impressive group. The Cardinals are coming off a very successful season a year ago, though they wound up tied for second in the Pac-8. They have the best record of any team in the league. They cap things off with an upset win over LSU in the Sun Bowl. Head Coach Bill Walsh says, candidly, the Cardinals will be hard-pressed to do that well again, and when you consider they lost quarterback guy Benjamin, receiver James Lofton, and some big people up front, that makes sense. But they do have some fine players back. Steve Dills will step in at quarterback. He showed his ability last year when Benjamin was hurt and missed some games Behind deals in the backfield are a couple of proven talents. Phil Francis, the senior from Beaverton, will be at fullback. Walt says if he stays healthy, he could be one of two 1,000 yard rushers on the Stanford team. The other is Dara Nelson, the exciting little halfback who exploded on the scene last year. The first freshman in conference history ever to gain 1,00 yards. He also caught 50 passes in NCAA record. The Stanford offense will be tailored to take full advantage of Nelson's talent. There's some talent on the other side of the line, too, and a coach well-known to Oregon fans. Fred Von Oppen spent five years coordinating the Ducks defense, joined the Stanford staff last year, and seems to have found a home.
