Summertime and the livin' is easy. And fresh fruit and vegetable prices and quality this week are going to make life even easier for you. Good news. Over in the vegetable apartment, lots of good values and great quality. Lots of things coming in locally. All types of lettuce, leaf lettuce, head lettuce, salad greens, spinach, all excellent quality and low prices. Broccoli, cauliflower coming in locally, 59 to 60 cents a pound. Even tomatoes out of California, a good value this week. Over in the fruit department, California, a lot happening right now from there. New crop of Valencia oranges, three pounds for a dollar. We talked about melons being a good value while the cantaloupe and honeydew melon is a little higher this week, the quality remains excellent. Watermelons are probably the best value out of California, as low as 19 to 25 cents a sound. Other good values out of California, seedless grapes, green and red, running about a dollar a pound. Best buys this week out of california, peaches and nectarines, last week they were about a dollar a pound, this week cut that price right in half, 49 to 59 cents a pound very good quality. If you want a good apple this year, this time of year, you're going to have to get a granny smith apple out of New Zealand, that's going to cost you some money, about a dollars a pound that's one of the few really high priced fruit items right now, locally. The weather has seemed to even out, local strawberries coming on very strongly, 59 to 69 cents a basket, 8 to 10 dollars a flat depending on if they're picked or you picked, very good quality. And a big surprise this week, fresh raspberries. The raspberry season's coming on a week or two early because of the warm weather. Most of the stores should have fresh raspberries in the store for the weekend. They're one of my all-time favorites. So all in all, the livin' is easy and fresh vegetables and fresh fruit are wonderful. For eyewitness news... One of the sacraments of the Native American church involves the use of peyote, a hallucinogenic drug from the cactus. It's administered by a sanctioned medicine man. Smith was fired as a counselor for the Douglas County Council on Alcohol and Drug after using peyote at his church. He was then denied unemployment benefits. Today, the Supreme Court changed that.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70989/file/156940#t=552.94,586.36
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70989/file/156940/transcript/88327/annotation/32
Speaker 12: I think it's a victory for Indian people. Here it is a week before the 4th of July weekend. Time really flies when you're having fun. And this week we're going to concentrate on all the fresh fruit coming in. First off, let's go from far away. New Zealand. Granny Smith apples coming in, the only really fresh apples right now. And also kiwifruit, a delightful addition to a fruit salad. Moving into California. This is probably one of the best weeks for the California groupie flesh fruit, meaning peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, whatnot. Lots of varieties of plums. Lots of good quality. Prices are down. They're going to start going up next week. But again, this week, an excellent buy. Prices hovering around, 49 cents a pound. Seedless grapes, again, coming in out of California. About a dollar a pound. Prices will be escalating on grapes next week. We've been seeing a lot of Mexican grapes, not as good quality as the California superior grapes. Also out of California, melons. We talked about how wonderful the cantaloupes and honeydews have been. There's still good watermelons coming in right now, 17 to 19 cents a pound, very sweet. Now let's move to the local market. What happened to the strawberries? They're all gone. The hot weather last week literally burned up all the strawberries right on the vine. So the strawberry season is kaput. That means it's over. But what we've got now, we told you last week we'd have them, fresh raspberries. Looks like it's going to be a fairly short season with raspberries, because the weather has been so unseasonably warm. Blueberries are right around the corner. People have said, where are the cherries? Again, because of the warm weather and the wet weather that we had a couple weeks ago, the cheries have had a lot of splitting on the trees. So cherry prices are up, and it looks like it is going to a short season for cherries. But overall, it's a very good year right now for the fruit. There's lots of good selection, and there's lots of good quality on the market right now. Next week, we're going to take a look at the local vegetable market and see how that's progressing. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry Potassian.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70989/file/156940#t=725.35,855.99
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70989/file/156940/transcript/88327/annotation/38
Speaker 14: When a tentative agreement was announced last Friday between Warehouser and the unions, striking mill workers were hopeful.
