The site for the riverfront park is across Franklin Boulevard from the University of Oregon. The 70 acres contain a portion of the mill race and extend the Willamette River. Designer Barry El-Bassani says he wanted to create and maintain a park-like environment. One that preserves the natural states of the Milreson River and creates some new open spaces. Many at the session concede the master plan is a thoughtful document that goes a long way toward addressing some key community concerns, but there are still questions awaiting answers. How to guarantee good access without creating traffic problems elsewhere. How to maintain the park like vistas. How to ensure that the buildings, 4,000 people, and their vehicles don't ruin the surrounding environment. The developers believe that building the project in phases will give them better control over a number of variables. And since the master plan calls for construction to begin on the land closest to Franklin Boulevard, they say the River Greenway will be protected should the project be terminated. The plan will now be the subject of a series of committee reviews before the next phase of development can begin.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71209/file/157160#t=174.41,224.36
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71209/file/157160/transcript/88623/annotation/9
Speaker 6: It's a simple fact that star fire lumber is out of logs and we have no way to obtain any more logs because the Forest Service has the woods shut down because of the fire danger.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71209/file/157160#t=242.93,252.41
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71209/file/157160/transcript/88623/annotation/10
Speaker 7: By 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoons, the yard at Starfire Lumber is usually busy. And Monday morning, they'll issue a similar layoff notice to 130 dayside workers. The problem at Star Fire is the same as at small and intermediate mills all over the Willamette Valley. No logs in their inventory piles. Cut-back lumber in Eugene already has three mills closed, idling about 300 people. Cone lumber in Goshen is down four million board feet from its normal October stockpile. The reason for the widespread lack of product is simple. High temperatures and tender dry conditions in Oregon's fire ravaged forests have closed the woods. Starfire Comptroller Bob Scott says his fallers have harvested only five days since September 1st.
