We're starting to see some price increases in the fruit and vegetable market. First of all, let's look at the vegetables. Things out of California are gonna be higher priced this week. Broccoli and cauliflower, they're up running about a dollar a pound. Lettuce, spinach, they are up too. Anywhere from 40 to 70 cents a head. Cucumbers out of Texas. $2.49, they're a little higher. Tomatoes out of Florida, depending on what size, anywhere from $0.49 to $0,79 a pound. So vegetable prices are on the up right now, mainly because of where stuff is coming from, much farther away. Best buys, potatoes, onions, rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, very reasonably priced. Over in the fruit department, a little bit better news for you, bananas right now. Running very good, three, four pounds for a dollar. Citrus out of California, royal mandarins, grapefruit, oranges, all very, very good. A tip when looking for navel oranges. You want to buy a larger navel orange. A smaller navel because of the thick skin on a navel won't give you much meat, so look for a little bit larger naval orange to compensate for that thick skin. Finally, tropical fruit are in now. Papayas out of Hawaii and pineapples. Papayans running about a dollar to a dollar and a half, very good and pineaples running right about the same. A tip about buying pineapples. Pineapples are picked and they don't ripen anymore because they have very low carbohydrate content. So when you buy a pineapple off the store, generally they're going to be picked ripe. You just look for good color. There's nothing you can do about pulling out or smelling them. If they look good, they are good. They don't want to have any soft spots. But remember, pineapples, they dont get any riper than after you buy them. Although the prices are 75 percent higher than they were last year, they are only half as high as they were at their peak in 1980. Still, those rising timber prices signal wood products activity, and another sign of that is the increase in Eugene City building permit applications. At 100 a month now, their numbers have nearly doubled from levels of 1981. Still, most of those permits are for remodeling jobs. The Springfield Utility Board handed its customers a Valentine gift this week, a three and a third percent rate cut. It's a refund of the whoops contingency funds Sub had set up, but a judge has ruled Sub doesn't have to pay for the unbuilt whoops plants. It's budget time for Lane County, and already there's a $5 million discrepancy between what county departments want next year and the tax money the county will get. Acting Administrator Margaret Mahoney says that may mean a levy on some future ballot, but she says it's still too early to tell. A bill introduced by Portland representative Vera Katz to limit fraternal and religious organization tax exemptions has drawn some predictable fire.
