Closer to the crater, across the vast pumice desert where a whole side of the mountain is buried, underground water steams to the surface from hot rocks below. This is a land of eerie grandeur, now a national monument, but a land known mostly to earth scientists, the geologists, and to their helicopter pilots. This day, the U.S. Geological Survey said we could join their crater crew, working there on the south side of the lava dome, a dome that has grown now to nearly cover the floor of the crater. As the helicopter landed here, 6,000 feet above sea level, we realized that if this dome keeps growing, the geologists will soon be driven out, unable to work on what they call the backside of the dome. As it was, our helicopter could not stay. It had to fly out to a safe distance. But even this departure gave us a chance to demonstrate the size of this place. With the helicopter gone, we had expected to be left in silence. What we found instead was the most awesome part of our visit. The walls of the crater, a 2,000-foot-high horseshoe of stratified cliffs, were alive with falling rocks. Some rockfalls were as loud as gunshots, the distance from us so great we saw the strikes before we heard the sound. That sound kept up the whole two and a half hours we were in the crater.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387#t=403.06,511.6
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387/transcript/87022/annotation/15
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387#t=515.51,515.51
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387/transcript/87022/annotation/16
Speaker 11: We set off, picking a treacherous path through a cavern of pumice and daysite rock, much of it thrown down here during the last eruption, August 17th. All of the material out here has been thrown out in past eruptions, either explosive eruptions, or as the dome has grown, it's rolled off, some of them very large, like this over here. This very large rock, big as a house, certainly, rolled down here during the last eruption about two weeks ago. And as it did, it cut a very deep trench about ten feet deep and came to rest right here. And since then it's cracked, and you can see heat rising from the crack. As it continues to cool, it will break down even more until it's broken down into very small pieces. Well, as you can see, we're heading into Labor Day weekend. I'm about to give birth to a little cassava, it looks like. What's ahead for Labor Day weekend? Well, very good fruit and vegetable prices for us. First of all, fruit department. Melons, watermelon coming in from Hermiston, Oregon, and out of California. Prices run from six cents a pound to about 12 cents a pound, depending on where they're from, and depending if you're getting whole or half melons. But the watermelons are all very, very sweet for the weekend, so I hope it's warm. Other good items in the fruit department. Pineapple is about 99 cents a piece, very, very good. Seedless grapes, red and green coming in now, as low as 40 cents a pound. That's very cheap. Anywhere 60 to 70 cents a pound, that's a good price, too. Grapes, very, very good. Other best buys in the fruit department, local Bartlett pears and Italian prune plums coming in about 29 to 39 cents a pound. Good weekend for fruit. Swinging over to the vegetable department, highlight this week, golden jubilee corn coming in locally. 8 cents to 12 cents a year. Excellent quality, very, very sweet right now, local corn. Other things happening locally. Tomatoes and eggplant, running anywhere from 30 to 50 cents a pound depending on size and quality. Very good flavor in the tomatoes right now. Local tomatoes are the best. And also on the eggplant. Finally, in the vegetable department, red bell peppers. They have the highest amount of vitamin C per pound in a vegetable. They're very sweet, excellent in salads, excellent in stir fries. Once again, red bell peppers. Well, it looks like I'm having some contractions. I think I'm going to name my cassava Casey. Have a good Labor Day weekend, drive safely for Eyewitness News. I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387#t=1448.41,1540.649
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387/transcript/87022/annotation/90
Speaker 33: Oh I objections is that I think that having been involved with a three person debate two years ago, I think that they're basically worthless. Heavily armed sheriff's deputies surrounded the village green mobile home park in Wood Village. After Deputy Jerry Pritchard was shot in the leg, giving chase to a fleeing bank robber. Gas masked deputies brought in tear gas to flush the suspect out and ordered him to surrender. They yanked the suspect from the underbelly of the mobile home and rushed him to a waiting ambulance where first aid was immediately administered. He was rushed to Portland Adventist Hospital in serious condition, suffering from toxic smoke and fume inhalation. It wasn't until the capture that police realized it was Turner, the man who broke out of Lewis County's jail a month ago. Later, sheriff's deputies carried out a loaded M 16 rifle from the mobile home Turner was holed up in. This morning, Deputy Pritcher was doing well, recovering both.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387#t=3065.129,3114.569
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387/transcript/87022/annotation/139
Speaker 46: Involved and as soon as I heard the shooting stopped I I got out to try and return fire and he was already back in his car and down the road and it's at that time I noticed I had been shot 'cause I I because I must have put pressure on my leg.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387#t=3118.27,3134.27
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70441/file/156387/transcript/87022/annotation/140
Speaker 47: So you went out dove hunting this weekend, shot those two boxes of shells up that cost $6 each, and decided you needed to do a little hand loading. Well, what do you need to hand load? You need a loader, you need some empty shells, some shot, some powder, some primes, and some wads. You got all the components to hand load with. It's not real easy, and there's some real good books out that'll help you start hand loading. I personally like to hand load, I prefer hand loaded shells over factory loaded shells. And besides the fact of them being cheaper, I enjoy sitting here at the loading bench, loading a shell, and thinking about where I'm going to shoot that shell, where I'm going to be in the field when that shell goes off. I like to hand load for a lot of more different reasons than just it's economical. If you decide to hand load, be careful. It says danger on a lot of these primes and shots. You're fooling with explosives. You hand load, enjoy every one you load.
