Here we are kind of the end of January. We're in the middle of winter and with all the wet, dreary weather we've been having, what can you do to cheer yourself up? Well, think chili. Well, not this kind of chili, but the country chili because you may not know this, but we import a lot of fresh fruit from chili. This time of the year we're getting nectarines, plums, red and green seedless grapes, apricots and peaches and cherries are the highlight of the Chilean fruit that we import. Now prices on the Chileans fruit are a little high, about $2 a pound for most of these items, but right now the flavor is very good and prices will be coming down. So it's a nice thing to try. Couple that with some California kiwis and a tropical pineapple and have a nice fruit salad and think it's the middle of summer. Basically, I've got good news to tell you this week about fruits and vegetables. Vegetable prices are down. We've had not as bad of a freeze this year in Florida, drier weather in California. What does that mean? Lower vegetable prices, better vegetable quality. Head lettuce and leaf lettuce, they were very high last week, two weeks ago. They've come down. Head lettuce is lowest 49 cents a head. Tomatoes, you know how I hate those Florida tomatoes. Well, the tomatoes are coming out of Mexico now and prices have come down, as low as 69 cents for large tomatoes and 69 cents a basket for cherry tomatoes. And that's good news. New items of the week out of California, new crop California strawberries coming in. Just in time for Valentine's Day, about a dollar and a half a basket. Item of the week. Out of California, fresh, young, tender asparagus. I love that, young tender asparagus. It's a little high priced, about $2.50 a pound, but it's very tasty, excellent law, lightly steamed vegetable. Good thing to add. So what have we got? Good news. Good fruits, good vegetables, good prices, and pretty good quality. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70911/file/156862#t=100.67,205.36
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70911/file/156862/transcript/90012/annotation/6
Speaker 5: The three women have been held in West German jails for the last three months. All three resigned their titles and left the Rajnishpuram Commune last September. Days after their departure, Bhagwan leveled a series of accusations at Sheila and what he called her gang. And now, even with Baguuan gone and the commune disbanding, those criminal charges remain. Baguán left the country after admitting two counts on a federal indictment of immigration fraud. Sheila is named on that same indictment. But the three also face attempted murder charges in the Dalles for an alleged try to poison the Baguans' doctor. And there may be additional charges relating to wiretapping and alleged poisonings of county commissioners, of an arson fire in the Wasco County Planning Office. And even the alleged salad bar poisonings that hit some 700 restaurant patrons in the Dalles. The three women who've been jailed together since October may be split up once they're in the United States. Federal authorities want Sheila jailed in Portland until the federal charges are out of the way. Pooja's attorneys say she has a sister dying of cancer in the San Francisco area. They want Poojah held close to her last living relative. And Shadi Badrath is expected to be sent to Wasco County authorities in the Dalles while she awaits trial. Federal authorities won't reveal their timetable for returning the three women, but sources close to the case say Sheila and her two friends should be back in the United States by this weekend, or Monday or Tuesday at the latest.
