Very little is said about the grieving, but it is real and it does exist. The grieving can eventually lead to depression. Studies have shown that up to 33% of women will experience a significant depression after a mis carriage that may last for 3 to 6 months. Symptoms of the depression can include loss of appetite. Problems, sleeping, and aversion to anything that usually gives them pleasure. They should go see their doctor, and we usually say if it lasts longer than six weeks, it's a reasonable time to seek consultation. One of the hardest parts for other people around is what to say to someone who's had a miscarriage. I can tell you quickly, there's some things you should never say. We shouldn't say things like, oh don't worry, you can have another, or a statement like it's really for the best. Because what those statements do is they deny the person from having the feeling. It's not a question of whether she can have another child or whether the miscarriage would have been the result of an abnormal pregnancy anyway. The issue is, is that she lost a desired pregnancy. So those statements tend to deny her feelings. A better thing to say would be, I'm sorry that this happened. My thoughts are with you. There's not much that I can say, but I wanted to tell you that I'm caring for you. Is there anything that you need? Couples relate differently to miscarriages. Men usually feel the guilt to a different degree. They may feel guilty that their partner feels guilty. Most of the guilt evolves around, did I cause this miscarriage? Is there something I could have done to prevent it? If children, usually under the age of 10, know that the woman has been pregnant or their mother has been pregnancy and she's lost a baby, they'll often assume that it's something they did, they thought, or they could have done to cause the miscarriages. It's very important to talk about the miscaretes with them and explain to them that they didn't cause it. Children often assume guilt where there is no guilt. One of the questions that often comes up is when can a couple try again to become pregnant? Most women will ovulate within four to six weeks after a pregnancy, whether that's a pregnancy loss or a full term pregnancy. We usually recommend that a couple not try to get pregnant for approximately three periods or two full cycles. That lets the lining of the uterus heal the best and will ensure the healthiest pregnancy the next time.
