If all tangerines are mandarin oranges, why aren't all mandarin orange tangerine? Confused? Well, let me help you to straighten out the issue of citrus. Mandarin oranges comprise a large segment of sweet mandarin type oranges. The name mandarin comes from the fact that these type of oranges were originally grown in China. And The shape of the orange resembles the hats that the Chinese officials of that era wore. Now what they've done is they took the tangerine and they hybridized it with other fruits. They took tangerines and crossed them with oranges and got the tanjor. The temple mandarin orange is a tanjorer. They also took tingerines and cross them with grapefruits and pumelos and got tangellos. The miniola is a very popular tangello, as well as the Fairchild tangella. So we're coming into that season right now. What do we have on the market right now, besides good oranges, good navel oranges, and good grapefruit? Well, there are Fairchild tangellos coming in. The Fairchild Tangellos are very sweet and seedless right now with a skin that is not easily peeled, and we also have the Satsuma tangerine. Now the Sotsuma tangerine is probably the most famous. It's grown in California and imported from Japan. The satsuma is a seedless. The word satsume does mean seedless, it's a easily peeled, easily segmented fruit, very sweet. Why am I telling you about all this citrus on the market right now? Well, we're coming into cold season, and there are a few better sources of vitamin C than all this delicious citrus that's on the markets right now, and will be on the market in the next month or two. So whether you buy tangerines, tangelos... Or tangeurs, all you have to remember is they're all very sweet and they're all delicious.
