The 36-year-old clerk at this dairy mart was supposed to finish work at 11 o'clock on February 9. Court records released today describe the gruesome acts that Donnie Friedman has now admitted committing. With a large, extremely sharp knife, Donnie stabbed Karen Karnes eight times. One was a deep wound in her neck. Others penetrated her skull. One witness was ready to testify that Donnie told her he went for the brain because it's the fastest thing to go. Freeman agreed that the story goes like this. After leaving Karn's mutilated body and taking around $500, Donnie left the Dairy Mart and briefly came to his stepmother's apartment. He admits that he and his brother Jack then went to a restaurant two blocks away where they asked for change for two $20 bills. They stayed out all night, eventually taking a cab to downtown Eugene. Later that day, they went to Jack's home. Jack's wife was prepared to testify that Donnie admitted, we killed her, they'll never find us. And later, she wouldn't die, she wouldn't fall down, she kept trying to survive. Freeman and his brother both eventually confessed to the police on videotape, but Donnie's attorney lost an earlier attempt to have the videotapes kept out of court because Freeman was allegedly denied his right to see an attorney after he'd requested it. When nighttime arrives, people tend to forget the mountains and hit the streets in search of the big payoff. There are casinos on both sides of the street. Caesars tries to draw the upscale gambler. The others are more likely to go after the bus tour crowd. If you're planning to gamble, it's best to learn the rules before you join a game. Knowledgeable players may get irritated if the novice slows up their table. Like Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe uses big-name entertainment to draw people into the hotels and casinos. If you like entertainment but don't want to pay the big price tag, there's always surprisingly good talent in the lounges. When it's time for a dinner break, try the House of Lords in the Sahara Tahoe. For about thirty or forty dollars per person, you get a lot of red leather, excellent service, and a gourmet meal. For more moderate prices and excellent seafood, go to the Dory's Ore, a few blocks south of the casino strip. By the way, when you're gambling, you may get some unsolicited advice if you're not doing well. The guy in the coat here, for example, kept telling me I should drop my nickels in five at a time. Put a couple more nickels in there and you'll win. What, put them in five at a time? Why not? June signifies the real beginning of the fruit season out of California. Let's take a look. We've got some good buys in the fruit department this week. Out of California, watermelons running 19 to 25 cents a pound. Very good quality. The melons, they've been out of Mexico in high price. We're now cantaloupe and honeydew coming out of California as low as 40 to 50 cents a pound, excellent sweet melons. Strawberries are seasoned still about a week away. California's strawberry crop, peak of the crop right now, 60 to 80 cents a basket, very good. New item, peaches and nectarines coming in right now. Peaches running about a dollar a pound. Prices will drop soon, but very, very good quality. Granny Smith apples, not out of California, but New Zealand pretty far away. A real fresh apple right now and an excellent addition to any fruit salad. What's high priced out of California this week in the fruit market? Valencia oranges. I guess Mr. Sunkist bought a new car, but Valencia Oranges are still running about 40 to 50 cents a pound, a lot of money for oranges. Swinging over to the vegetable market locally, where we're seeing some nice salad greens. Beautiful lettuce, red leaf, green leaf, romaine, butter, spinach, all coming in right now, very reasonably priced, 40, 50 cents a head. Carrots out of California, corn out of california, very, very good quality, very reasonable priced. Best buys, yellow onions, dirt cheap, they ought to be, they're grown in dirt, four or five units, six pounds for a dollar, good quality onions. What's high price this week? Green peppers, about a dollar and a half a pound, and red and green cabbage, green cabbage about 50 cents a pound and red cabbage about 80 cents a pound maybe even a little higher. Why is it so expensive? Short supply. A good week to maybe skip some cabbage and go to something else. But all in all, it's an excellent week for eating fruits and vegetables, so eat some this week. For eyewitness news, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70405/file/156349#t=2445.9,2544.34
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70405/file/156349/transcript/86374/annotation/97
Speaker 55: Express their views in the 10 minute period, the time allows, they come back out of the gym and say they have a concern with this big donation, that concern is great.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70405/file/156349#t=2632.28,2638.84
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70405/file/156349/transcript/86374/annotation/98
Speaker 24: Period. It was the third and most damaging raid in the past six weeks while Israel said the hour-long raid was in retaliation for the shooting of its ambassador to Britain. The PLO denied that its people were involved in that attack. The PLO responded with anti-aircraft fire as the jet swooped down on Beirut and later sent Katusha rockets pouring on Israeli settlements along the border.
