They're caught on trolling spinners. Now not everybody knows how to troll trolling spinners, but I'm gonna show you a couple little tricks here that's gonna help you out some. I know you've been out on a lake whenever you come in with four or five nice fish. There's been some other guys come in with a whole boat load of fish and you say, what were they doing that I wasn't doing? Well I'm going to show you couple little tricks anytime you're out trolling trolling spinners you should know what you're doing. That'll improve your catch a bunch. Now then first of all you've got to have a rod. I use a steelhead rod. It's pretty strong in the handle. It's got a light tip so you can feel those spinners and you don't pull the fish off when he hits, but it's comfortable to reel a fish in and hold all these big trolling spinners out there with. The other thing is important how you rig these spinners up from the end of your line down to this hook that's hooked into the... Now these trolling spinners, you want to troll them slow where they'll just oscillate a little bit. You don't want a trolling spinner going real fast, real slow. Use new spinners. Don't use some that you've had in your tackle box for a year or so. Those that you keep in your tackled box that get all dull don't have enough flash to them. That will improve your catch rate a little bit. The closer to the bait you get the more important these troll and spinner rigs get. I use about six pound test leader right down by the by the hook and I use about 18 inches of it. I think 3 feet is too far away from your trolling spinners and 8 or 10 inches is a little bit too close to them. The fish are a little shy about running right up on those spinners. So I have worked out over the years a lot of trolling trips but about 18 inch is just about right. Now then when you get down to this hook it gets more and more important. If you are hooking fish and losing them Maybe you're not using a big enough hook. I use about a size two or four. Open, straight hook with no bend in it and just slide a worm up over it, slide him up over the eye of the hook a little bit and put a piece of corn on there to hold it up straight. Now this is your coconut rig. You don't need a bunch of rubber bands and things. The trick to holding onto a coconut after you hook them is don't try to horse him to the boat as soon as he hits. When he hits, shakes the end of the rod a few times, give the fish a little bit of slack. He needs some room to fight around here a little so he don't tear the hooks out it and then play him up to the boat and put him in the net. But make sure whenever you bait this hook up that everything you put on there is straight so it don't turn or spin. Now you can't remember all these things but if you try another one of these every time I tell you about trolling spinners you're going to improve your catch. This is a great way to fish. I know some of these fly fishing purists say I would never ever troll a bunch of trolling spinner. I do because it's another way of fishing, it's an interesting way of fish and it's productive. So go out there and hit a couple this weekend and be careful and don't run into me because that's what I'm going to be doing. This is Terry Coleman. For eyewitness sports.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70962/file/156913#t=2340.96,2507.55
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70962/file/156913/transcript/88238/annotation/110
Speaker 40: The smiles on the faces of Oregon Special Olympians reflect the pride they have in these games.
