The body puts out a rush of adrenaline. There's two hormones that come out. One is epinephrine and the other is norepinephrine, and they serve to constrict our blood vessels and produce the fear or flight response. The problem that comes in during pregnancy, when this response is elicited over a long period of time and several times during pregnancy is that blood flow is shunted away from the uterus, away from womb, and away from baby, and more to the muscles and the liver and the brain. Now, although this is an adaptive mechanism which helps the organism survive, for the pregnant woman, this can be detrimental to the baby, particularly when it is done over a long period of time. Women will experience stresses in many different ways. They'll experience stresses by walking around, by moving heavy objects. Those are physical stresses. But they'll also experience psychological stresses, the stress that we feel when a sudden event happens. Both of these will release adrenaline and the two types of adrenaline. And both of them will lead to decreased blood flow of the baby. We know that women who experience chronic stresses, who have tough jobs, who spend a long time on their feet, more than four hours, more than lifting heavy objects, will have a higher rate of premature birth, a higher of premature labor, a higher rate of stillbirth, a high rate of bleeding during pregnancy, and a higher rate of growth lag. There are several recommendations from the American College of Ob-GYN. One of the main recommendations is that women refrain from heavy lifting during pregnancy over long periods of time. Once or twice a day is certainly okay, and normal activity is okay, but when the activity becomes excessive, particularly when it's combined with a stressful working environment, that will lead to more problems.
