The Filbert Festival celebrates the town's nutty heritage and gives folks a chance to enjoy all sorts of food and entertainment. And there's a wide range of events from classic car cruises and concerts to helicopter and hay rides. Things get going Friday evening at Island Park in Springfield. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for seniors, 50 cents for kids. Springfield is home to the first commercial filbert orchard in the U.S. And Filbert Fest weekend is a great time to tour the Doris Ranch. It's nestled on 250 acres off South Second Street in Springfield. The ranch is managed by the Willamalane Park and Recreation District, and as you wander through the grounds and the old barn, it's easy to get a feel for the place's history. But the Doris Ranch is also still very much in the present. It is a working Filbert farm, and in the fall, the trees produce more than 50 tons of nuts. This weekend, during Filbert Fest, there's a free shuttle Saturday and Sunday from the Festival Grounds at Island Park to the Dorus Ranch.
