The largest of these is agriculture, which generates about $34 million a year in sales. Following agriculture, Douglas County's next largest money generators are tourism, represented primarily by the successful Wildlife Safari in Winston, and small manufacturing firms. Overall, Douglas County's economy is healthier now than it's been for more than a decade. The surge in the wood products industry has pushed unemployment down to 6.3 percent, its lowest rate since 1977. A year ago, unemployment stood at 9.3%.
