This is one of ten federally funded Job Corps centers in the Northwest, one of 105 nationwide. Disadvantaged young adults aged 16 to 21 get an education and a job skill, all free of charge. The program is a resounding success in large part because the students live here full-time during their 8 to 24 months of training. But because they live here, full- time, and because of the fear that AIDS might spread, the federal government has decided to exclude anyone whose blood contains the antibody for the AIDS virus. The Job Corps then gives those students, three options. They can try to transfer to one of the few Job Corps centers that allow students to live off campus. There is only one such center in the Northwest. Only a handful of those students live off-campus, and they must have enough money to pay for their own rent, utilities, and transportation.
