Instead, it points to a number of smaller errors in planning and in judgment, which combined to create the tragedy. Among the report's conclusions, weather on Mount Hood was threatening to turn bad even before the climb began. The group's leaders should have paid more attention to the forecasts. Once the climb was underway, Father Tom Gohman was the one man in charge. His decision to press higher on the mountain, in face of poor weather, was, quote, unsafe mountain practice. The report called Father Goman's behavior out of character. During the climb, some basic equipment was lacking. Boots, insulation pads, head gear, and other survival equipment was not furnished in proper quantity. Also during the climb the school's academic schedule forced, quote poor judgment. The report suggests that the climbers might have been more inclined to turn back or to reschedule their trip if the school's academic calendar had not been so crowded. Also, the school budgeted only about one leader for every eight climbers. The report says this was inadequate. It says there should have been about one leader for every four students. On guide Ralph Summers' decision to leave the group in the snow cave and hike out for help, the report makes no conclusion. Parents of several students who died on the mountain expressed relief that the report was out and support for the school.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71001/file/156952#t=439.27,515.07
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71001/file/156952/transcript/88462/annotation/26
Speaker 12: I don't feel that there's, you know, the school did it tour or that anything other than just a terrible, very tragic set of circumstances conspired to take the lives of those nine people.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71001/file/156952#t=515.429,528.77
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71001/file/156952/transcript/88462/annotation/27
Speaker 13: Well, I don't really think there are any surprises here.
