In 1977, the Board of Higher Education voted to pull out its funds from American companies doing a substantial business in that country. But the Oregon Investment Council, which handles the state's investments, wouldn't go along with that, saying its decisions are made on financial considerations, not moral or political beliefs. Students say the Investment Council overstepped its bounds by flatly refusing to divest higher education's endowments. Over the six years this case has been fought, over 21 million dollars has been invested in 27 American companies operating in South Africa. The money is still invested, but if it had been extracted in June of this year, the state would have received just over 20 million dollars back, excluding dividends. It's not apples. It used to be apples. Now it's the banana. Now bananas have been around for thousands of years. They had their earliest origins growing in the tropical climates in southern Asia. Over the centuries, they slowly were migrated northeast. And finally, in about the 1850s, ships started importing cargo loads of bananas into this country. In 1876... They were served wrapped in tin foil and sold for $0.10 apiece at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. In 1899, a Captain Lorenzo Baker founded the United Fruit Company. He began importing bananas from countries in South America and Central America. Thus, these countries became known as the Banana Republic. Now, bananas are very important economically. In 1,000 square foot of space, where you can grow maybe 50 pounds of potatoes or a hundred pounds of wheat. You can grow 4,000 pounds of bananas. One of the reasons is because bananas grow on one of the largest non-woody stem plants, such as giant plants with hands and hands of bananas Now, bananas are also very important nutritionally, second only to strawberries in terms of nutritional value. Bananas are a natural laxative, and they also can be used in the treatment of certain kidney ailments. Besides that, they contain almost all the essential vitamins and minerals. Now green bananas do contain a lot of starch, but that starch turns completely to fruit sugar when the fruit ripens. So bananas, you can see, are a wonderful food. This week, they're also a very good buy at about 25 cents a pound. Finally, bananas have been used in slang terms all through the years, like going bananas or I can't hear you, I've got a banana in my ear. So go out and enjoy some bananas this week. And I like to think of myself as kind of the top banana. But those symptoms persisted and a blood test later confirmed doctors' fears. Tina had aplastic anemia. The most successful treatment for that illness is a bone marrow transplant, but without a twin sibling as a donor, chances of the marrow being accepted are very small. The other members of the Herring family were given blood tests to see who could possibly be a successful donor. Eleven-year-old Tiffany, who likes to avoid injections and needles when she can, was elected. Doctors say she was a perfect match.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70856/file/156807#t=1864.8,1899.18
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70856/file/156807/transcript/90021/annotation/207
Speaker 28: Well, I was sort of excited because I knew that it was like one in a hundred chance of me or the family being it. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terry Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70856/file/156807#t=2377.67,2492.33
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70856/file/156807/transcript/90021/annotation/228
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70856/file/156807#t=2535.26,2537.58
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70856/file/156807/transcript/90021/annotation/229
Speaker 39: Well, we very much enjoy having the timber offsets because they are considerable, and they defray local property taxes by, in our particular school districts, up to 50%.
