What they show is that more and more companies are logging their own lands as they try to avoid the high prices of their federal contracts. In reality, the 1982 cut on private lands is not much more than the average of the last 10 years, but it does show a dramatic shift away from public timber, at least in the short term. Here are the numbers. Both in 1971, and again in 76, the industry harvested about 3.6 billion board feet from its own land. In 1981, that total dropped to only 2 and 1 half billion. Then last year, the private harvest soared again to 3.2 billion board feet. That's pretty close to the 10-year average of just over 3 billion board feed. But the big shift shows up in percentages. Last year's private harvest was well over 50% of the Total Oregon Timber Harvest. Historically, the private cut has only been a little more than a third. Roy Schneider plays a put-upon cop, called into action to test out a souped-up surveillance and offensive machine, affectionately referred to as Blue Thunder. Schneider has his suspicions about the true use of the craft, especially after the government higher-ups try to knock him off the more he learns about the project.
