Bob Melbo of SP says the company's investigation shows the eight fired crew members were working on the bridge just minutes before the train passed. Dismissal letters went out to the workers on Tuesday. The foreman, with 30 years of experience with SP, has been fired for not admitting that work was performed on the bridge. His crew was fired for leaving the bridge unsafe for the train's passage. The crew also denied the track was left unsecured, but physical evidence disputed that. An inspection proved that 30 feet of track with a substantial five degree curve was held together by only four bolts. Bob Melbo says 13 to 20 are required. Other evidence suggests the track had been left inadequately secured the day before as well.
