And to complicate matters, the Weather Service is predicting that another thunder and lightning storm will strike the fire area sometime early this afternoon. So far, more than 70,000 acres of range and forest have been scorched by the Oregon blazes. A Forest Service spokeswoman says firefighting teams from six western states have doubled the number of people wrestling with the in-state fires in the past two days. And the combined crews are now concentrating on three main fire sites, one near the Anthony Lake ski area, another in the Huckleberry region near the town of Sumter, and a third southwest of Baker. Anthony Lakes has been evacuated, but crews say neither the ski area nor summer homes in the area have yet been threatened by the 4,000 acre blaze. High winds are apparently driving the 8,000-acre Huckleberry fire toward the Southwest Baker Blaze. With Forest Service teams powerless to slow down the fire's movement. At present, Sumpter is not being evacuated, but Forest Service officials have placed residents on alert and have asked them to monitor local radio stations for fire updates. The one positive note in Oregon's recent surge of summer fires is that the 43,000-acre blaze near Lakeview in the south central part of the state has been declared under control.
