If mistakes are made, too much holly will die and it won't grow its distinctive red berries next year. It is then loaded and hauled back to the barn where it is dipped in a hormone solution that helps keep the holly fresh and pliable. Some of the holly is packaged in half-pound bags, other is boxed for wholesale shipping, but the most labor-intensive process is the wreath making. The holly must first be stripped, leaving just three or four leaves on each stem, and then wrapped with the help of a small machine, making sure it is tight and securely tied. The process is slow and each wreath takes up to ten pounds of holly. That means they can only get about two wreaths from each crate they pick. But many people find the finished product to be worth the effort.
