If it's lunch with Ronnie and Nancy that you're looking for, you might as well forget it. They stay in the private areas of the White House. You'll only get to see the public rooms. The same goes for the Capitol tour, though, for some personalized attention, call your congressman or congresswoman. You'll deserve a Congressional Medal of Honor if you survive the tour of the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. That's where they make all the money. $40 billion a year. You'd wish they spent a little more to widen the carters. It's one of the most crowded tours in Washington. Definitely not for the claustrophobic. They swore to me that everything that goes on here is real. Then take a look at their gun collection, thousands of illegal ones, plus a few not-so illegal ones used in the grand finale of the FBI's hour-long tour. Conversely, 100 victims were slain by the hands of these death row assassins. The pendulum of social attitudes towards the death penalty has made three full swings in Oregon. In fact, it's been put on and off the books six times. Near the turn of the century, Salem lawmakers worried about winning votes back home passed the constitutional measure. Eleven years later, in World War I's first year, the measure was then deleted from the Constitution by a 157 vote margin. In 1920, executions were back on the books for the next 40 years. The death penalty found no place in the civil rights era of the 60s. In 1964, the measure was defeated by 150,000 votes. Then four years ago, death was reinstated as the harshest punishment in Oregon. But in 1980, the state's Supreme Court overturned the people's decision, citing constitutional flaws.
