It's been past practice to close a tavern down from anywhere from five to 20 days. This oftentimes costs the tavern owner anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 in lost revenue which he cannot afford. And we'd like to get that changed and have a fine imposed upon the person directly involved as well as the minor who tries to purchase the beer. Another law that we'd like to have changed is the... Advertising law. We would like to have the privilege of advertising our business, the product we sell. We'd like to have longer hours to operate, such as the clubs downtown, they close at 2.30, whereas we have to close at 1 o'clock. We would those privileges. We also would like to have entertainment on a limited basis. We're not permitted that now under the state laws, and We would like to have that. And we feel that we're being discriminated against. The stores, for instance, the chain stores, for the same violation, are oftentimes given a letter of warning, whereas a tavern owner gets closure. And this has been consistent for a number of years. For instance, on the 19th of July, the Liquor Commission rendered decisions against violators throughout the state. And there was 28 closures. 25 of them were taverns. Three of them more stores. And they were small stores at that. They were not supermarkets. And we would like to have equal rights, fair and equitable and firm laws. That's about the extent of it.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69183/file/155593#t=911.01,1031.089
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/69183/file/155593/transcript/79309/annotation/29
Speaker 15: The idea of having a group home is twofold. They're really most responsive to a group of adolescents. And so in this group foster home, what we plan is not only to have two foster parents hired to work with these youngsters, but also a professional group worker who comes in and works with the group. And it is this that's the key to succeeding with youngsters who are having problems with their own families and perhaps with other people. We can succeed with them in the community rather than shipping them off to institutions. By the way, some youngsters will continue being shipped to institutions simply because they can't get along with others enough to even try to work with them in the communities right now. Well, will you provide enough supervision? Well, our reply to that is that these youngsters know when they go in that this is an alternative to an institution, so they're motivated to try to get along and do well. Secondly, we have three full-time staff people, plus volunteers in the community who we know will be working with them, providing work opportunities, providing activities and so forth, that really is more supervision and activity than most children have the opportunity to have.
