It's the first closure in the plant's 25-year history, and for the southern Oregon coastal community, it means a loss of an annual payroll of $7 million. Plant manager Rod Lindquist says it's not marketing conditions that are forcing Champion to put the mill up for sale. Instead, it's a shortage of timber. Lindquist says the company has no more wood to cut on their own land, and they can only bid on about 10% of the federal timber in the area. The Forest Service restricts bidding on most of its Curry County timber to small businesses. Lindquists says those set-aside sales make it impossible to compete for low-cost logs. In about two weeks, Champion will have shipped the remainder of its inventory to markets in California and back east. In the meantime, a Macallan, Texas land developer, Dan Griffin is negotiating with champion to buy the plant. It has an asking price of three million dollars. Of Champion's three plywood plants in Oregon, Gold Beach produces the least volume. And Lindquist says the company has no plans now to dismantle the other mills at Roseburg and Lebanon. But you've got to remember to eat your fresh fruits and vegetables. You want to stay healthy. Now, over in the vegetable department, there are some good values, however, we're going to start to see prices escalate because things are starting to come from Mexico and from Florida, further away, higher prices. Good buys. Broccoli is as low as 49 cents a pound. Carrots, a quarter a pound, celery, about 39 cents a pounds. Let us about 49 to 59 cents ahead. These are some of the values. There are a couple of high price items, one of them being tomatoes. They're starting to come out of Florida right now. And about the best thing that I can say for these tomatoes is that they're red. The taste is a little off. They're only about $1 a pound, so you might watch your tomatoes this week. In the fruit department, there's a lot better news. There's a a lot of really good winter citrus to choose from, and a lot a good winter fruit in general. Grapefruit coming out of Indian River, Florida, excellent right now. Naval oranges out of California, as low as 29 cents a pound, very, very good right now! Satsuma seedless tangerines coming in also out of California, running about 69 cents a pound, and they are the best tangerine. And I want to caution you, buy these tangerins early. They're going to be out of stock by the time Christmas and Hanukkah gets here, so you want to get these in early. They're very, Very good. Other good things, apples, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith. Granny Smith, great for pies, running about 80 cents a pound, but very, very good quality. Pears, very reasonably priced right now. A couple of good bargains in the fruit department. Bananas, as low as 29 cents a pounds, very for this time of year. And California kiwi fruit season is right on us now. Kiwis, normally out of New Zealand for about 60 cents a piece, about half that price out of California. They're a little bit misshaped and kind of strange looking, but they are wonderful, a nice addition to a holiday plate. Next week, I'm going to show you how to make really inexpensive fruit baskets to give as gifts. Have a nice week. For Eyewitness News, I am Terry Potassium.
