But according to Debra, at least three of the shops were rude to her. For instance, she claims she called LD's hair fashions numerous times, and they would not make an appointment for a shampoo and set as guaranteed for free in her Jackpot publishing and ad company coupon booklet. LD's tells a different version. They claim that the woman with the southern accent only called twice. But in the past, they had serviced 106 coupon customers. Ann Havelock, the manager, shampooed and set 67 of those since March for little thanks. And we get paid by commission, not by the hour. So if we don't do it any customer, we don't get paid for it. If we do a customer and they pay us, then we get so much of that. Most of the coupons are good through December 1st, and she'll probably get her commission then. But she says it's a long time to wait for pay. Anne said with the holiday rush, she was turning away regular customers, let alone coupon holders. The Children's Services Division may end responsibility when persons reach age 18 instead of 21. Mental health has proposed closing mental retardation wards at Eastern Oregon State Hospital. This budget is one of two the governor expects to submit. The second is expected sometime midwinter. It will propose higher levels of spending on state programs that were cut in this budget. That more optimistic budget will be based on a more rosy economy and a possible federal income tax cut, both of which would generate more money for the state to spend. If the legislature deals with this budget the way it deals with most, it would likely make few changes in what the governor proposes. First, the bad new. Vegetables will be going up in price as we get away from local stuff and into California, Mexican, Texas, Florida, produce coming in, much more expensive. Cauliflower out of California, as high as $1 a head. Tomatoes, which have been a good buy up until this week, will be up in prices $0.70 a pound. Eggplant out of Mexico, as high as a dollar a piece. Green peppers, also high right now, over $1 a pound in some stores. Lettuce, which has been a pretty good buy out of California, will start to be going up in price soon. And finally, on the vegetable market, Hanukkah, first night is tonight. Potato pancakes are a must. Red, russet potatoes on the market, a little high price, but the quality is good and prices will be dropping. Over in the fruit department, best buys this week. Texas grapefruit coming in now. Excellent for eating or juicing. As low as five, six, seven for a dollar. Good quality grapefruit prices even will be dropping lower as the season continues. In the orange department, oranges right now, so-so, I check them before I buy them. The navels don't have much juice, are kind of tart. Valencias are a little past their prime right now. So you might watch your orange market pretty carefully. Boss pears coming in, excellent right now best eating pear on the market. Avocados, Zutanos, and Fuertes, three, four, five for a dollars. Not much flavor, but a good cheap avocado. Tropical pineapples coming in now. They say Del Monte, ready to eat. Excellent, good price. Finally, peanuts. Peanuts. If you can find any cheap peanuts, buy them because peanuts and peanut butter are going way up in price. There's a big peanut shortage. Maybe it's because the Democrats lost the election. I don't know. For Eyewitness News, I'm Terence Potassium.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70252/file/156196#t=2734.17,2840.51
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70252/file/156196/transcript/86267/annotation/117
Speaker 18: August 10th, 14-year-old Charmel Ulrich was kidnapped from a road near Shoals. August 21st, the girl's body was found in Lincoln County, and Michael Anthony Butler, William Perry Jackson, and Gary Allen Smith were charged. But before indictments were even handed down in that case, Multnomah County District Attorney Harle Haas announced that Smith and Jackson had been indicted for another murder. That was the August 5th beating death of a 59-year old widow from Selwood, Julia Annabelle Armstrong. That's the murder Smith is being tried for this week. Between them, Smith and Jackson are now charged with five murders in Oregon and Washington. But this is the first of the trials, and everyone involved expected to spend two days finding an unbiased jury. This morning, before jury selection began, Smith stood up to ask Judge Irving Steinbach to delay the trial, to change its location, and to exclude testimony from one witness and alleged accomplice in another case, Michael Butler. The judge said Smith's lawyers had made those motions before, and he dismissed them again. So over 50 prospective jurors were called in, and the judge and lawyers began the long process of quizzing each one individually in the judge's chambers, searching for 12 who say they have not heard of this defendant or this case, that they can judge the evidence fairly and can decide guilt or innocence on charges that could lead to the death penalty for Gary Allen Smith. Judge Steinbach says that he brought this case to trial as quickly as possible because he believes the man deserves a speedy trial. But it is a complex case and even when the jury is finally selected, it could take a week for them to hear all the evidence.
