Why do they do it at all? Why did I do it? Would I do it again under those circumstances? I think the answer has to be yes. And the reason is that the Germans were doing it. And the Germans were a fantastic military force under Hitler. We knew what Hitler was like. They already had the the V rockets, V one and V two, which they were shooting at at London, at England. We knew that they were working, and it started as much as two years ahead of us working on the creation of an atomic bomb. In the hands of the Germans, if they had it and we didn't, it could easily have meant total mastery of the world under Hitler. In a large bath with large carbon rods to slow down the neutrons to see if one could get our one hope is that both the United States and the Soviet Union will recognize the futility of trying to outbuild the other in nuclear strength, and also the cataclysmic danger inherent in the effort to do so. We urge upon the leaders of both countries that this recognition be made a cornerstone of national policy. And that it lead to the beginning of a mutually agreed upon reduction of nuclear armaments and for all nations to the ultimate goal of the total elimination of such weapons.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70688/file/156634#t=250.94,346.65
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70688/file/156634/transcript/87556/annotation/19
Speaker 16: We have an accreditation process. My perspective, I'd say funding, funding and funding. I just read National School Boards magazine on Friday, and I was interested to see that the number one concern of school boards and three out of four major geographic areas they had outlined that board members thought that funding was the chief problem. That kind of thing. We're working through ENSBRA to try to provide a whole body of professional development for educators. I don't think schools have totally gotten away from the basics. I don't believe that to be true. What are basics is a basic question, if you know what I mean. Computer literacy has now been defined as a basic by the excellence report. Example is if we're going to ask for more money, which we haven't done since nineteen eighty. Certainly I'm one of the point people that goes out and explains. It's much different on our hand is taken out. There are some real interesting points. Boy, there's still a lot of fishing going on out there. Now the steelhead fish season has only got about another month here, and some of the fish are getting dark now, and they're not quite as exciting to chase as they were when they were bright and first coming in. And hunting season is all over with, that's for sure. So what's left to do? Well, there's a lot of good things going on now. I always enjoy getting out and chasing a few of these early spring crappies. You have to fish for them a little different than you do any other time of the year. The water's still cold, and remember they're cold-blooded and their body metabolism slowed way down. So if you're out fishing with crappies, fish deep and fish real slow. There's a lot of other good things going on too. I can think of a half a dozen places I could be fishing today. Over on the coast in the estuaries, there's a lot of bottom fish over there. All you gotta do is go over there, throw a big hunk of something out there and let it set. You catch flounders, all kinds of things on the bottom. Also, the catfish have beginning to start spawn. They're coming into shallow water now. February's a good month to catch catfish. They're ugly critters, but you get a few of them cooked up and in the pan, you'll realize how beautiful they are. So if you're looking for something to do in these early months of the year when it's kind of cool and you got cabin fever, get out and go fishing. You don't have to catch fish in 15-pound segments for it to be fun. Some of these good fish come in smaller packages. You might even come out here and catch something like this. So if you're looking around for something to do, and you're trying to find something to kill the winter doldrums in January and February, get out and try fishing in some of the smaller areas for some of the smaller fish. It also causes cancer in lab animals. This morning, Environmental Protection Agency Chief William Ruckels House released his agency's recommendations on allowable levels of EDB in the food we eat. The EPA now says EDB residues shouldn't be higher than 30 parts per billion in ready-to-eat foods like cereals, bread, and other baked goods. For so-called intermediate finished foods like flour, cake, and muffin mixes, the recommended maximum is 150 parts per billion. And for raw grain for human consumption, like wheat, corn, and oats, the maximum level is 900 parts per billion. EDB decomposes quickly, according to agriculture officials, and they say only small amounts of food will actually be pulled from store shelves.
