Prices are down, quality is up. What more can I say? I'll say more. Over in the vegetable department, lettuce, all the leaf items that we've been paying a dollar ahead for, they're coming in locally now, running about 50 to 60 cents a head. Head lettuce, on the other hand, out of California, is still high, 79 to 98 cents a ahead. So you might go to the leaf item or spinach as an alternative. Out of California there are some good values. Celery's down, about 60 cents a bunch, carrots, three, four, five pounds per dollar, very good buy. Zucchini, 39 to 59 cents a pound. So prices are coming down. Locally, the asparagus crop is just finishing up. There's still some good asparagus, but if the weather gets hot it'll be gone, and local artichokes are coming in. If you've never had any of these small baby local arti-chokes, they're wonderful. The entire choke is usually edible. Over in the fruit department out of California, the soft fruit season is beginning to really hum. Peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, all coming in right now. Probably the best quality would be in the plums and the peaches. Prices run about 69 to 98 cents a pound, but very, very good. Also out of California, cantaloupes, honeydews, watermelons coming on very strong. Prices will vary on watermelon, 19 to 29 cents a pound. Other melons are running about 39 to 59 cents a pound, but the quality is just excellent. Very, very sweet. Another thing that's very, very sweet and local, strawberries. The weather's gotten good, we've had some decent weather. Strawberries, 59 cents, 69 cents a basket, $7 to $9 a flat. And if the weather holds, we should have fresh local berries for the next three weeks. So all in all, a really good week for fruits and vegetables. Dave Burks says he's still building a case. Oregon Solans are weary after a hundred eighty days of deliberation and arguments, but they still haven't accomplished the most vital item on their list, revision of the state's tax structure. The Senate has passed a local government spending limit but has not yet extended property tax relief, and the leader of that body says he thinks tax relief is all that's needed. Senate President Edward Faddeley says there's no need to pass new tax measures on for voter approval, but House Speaker Grant and Karens disagreed.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70579/file/156525#t=1665.35,1723.53
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/70579/file/156525/transcript/86748/annotation/68
Speaker 5: Our goal is to refer to the people a property tax relief mechanism, a property tax relief alternative to refinance a good portion of local government costs off of the property tax onto an alternative revenue measure. We'll finish our Week in Review with a California story, really the story of a transplanted Oregon event. Tuesday night, the Oregon Bach Festival played to an audience of 8,000 in the Hollywood Bowl. It was a first for the festival performers and a first for the bowl. Is the organ in yet? I think the organ is filling in all the time with continuo, so I'd like to sweeten the organ. But any butterflies needn't have stirred themselves. When the audience was finally seated and the music began, the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach seemed to transport performers and spectators to a loftier plane. By all accounts, it was a success.
