That means computers which are usually down three or four days a year have already been silent for a total of three weeks in 1980. One sympathetic department even built a fan to try to keep the computers cool. A more long-term solution lies with this machine, a self-contained air conditioning unit which works separately from the university's physical plant. It should be cranking out cool air by the end of next week. Besides the cooling problems, there's also a problem of capacity. This computer system is considered 10 years behind the times. The nerve center here is only programmed to do one job at a time. Because the parade route had been washed clear of ash, most people didn't appear threatened at all. But there were those who were not taking any chances. Spectacular flower-covered floats, entertaining bands and precision drill teams, and about as much fun as any kid of any age could ask for. The ash protected the mass adopted the crowd.
