According to SP officials, at around 1030 that morning, the 100-car Toledo to Eugene freight train was making its once-daily north-to-south run when 10 cars jumped the tracks between Eddyville and Nashville. The wreck occurred at a bend of the Toledo line where a section of rail had apparently cracked and broken. Before the train could be brought under control, SP maintenance personnel say the cars were more or less driven off the broken track by a trailing set of pusher engines. A middle section of cars tore up about 1,000 feet of track before jumping down from the rail bed and slashing across the Eddyville-Nashville road, where they cut the highway and closed it to through traffic. The wreck also destroyed water lines to nearby houses and forced the temporary evacuation of the occupants. Although the cars contained no hazardous materials, work crews did have difficulty clearing up the mess of twisted steel due to the huge heavy rolls of paper being carried inside many of the broken cars. Those rolls caused several of the cars to weigh more than 100 tons and made it all but impossible for a construction crane to move them until they were partially unloaded. Southern Pacific engineers say they'll have the Toledo line reopen Saturday evening sometime before dark. They also indicate that State Highway Department crews will have the Nashville-Eddieville Road reopened about the same time. Here at Eddiville, this is Ken Embury, Eyewitness News. One of those will work.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71116/file/157067#t=265.63,357.94
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71116/file/157067/transcript/88549/annotation/16
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71116/file/157067#t=372.15,375.71
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71116/file/157067/transcript/88549/annotation/17
Speaker 9: Him, whether he'd taken anything, and of course a two and a half year old, he was immediately upset because I was upset, and then he didn't want to tell me anything.
