The offer was turned down by a 5 to 1 margin. Then both sides upped the ante. On July 9, the union set up mass picket lines, shutting down Warehouses Northwest Paper Mills for three days. The paper workers had not previously been affected by the strike, and a shutdown cost the company a substantial amount of money. The company countered with a new offer, which included elimination of the company's logging operation and would cost 2,300 loggers their jobs. Letters to striking workers also contained a threat that if the strike wasn't settled by July 25th, new workers would be hired. With the help of a federal mediator, a new agreement was reached last week. If approved, it would save the logger's jobs, but still included the 30 percent wage cut. IWA members voted this week on that proposal. And though results of the vote have been eagerly awaited, many union members called it a no-win situation. If the offer had been rejected, the company said it would hire replacement workers, raising the threat of violence and the permanent loss of their jobs. But now that the contract has been accepted, many return to work bitter. Thousands of employees could lose as much as $5,000 a year, and it could take communities where these mills are located, like Springfield and Coos Bay, years to recover from the economic shock.
text/plain
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71002/file/156953#t=93.7,173.26
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71002/file/156953/transcript/88461/annotation/6
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71002/file/156953#t=191.22,192.56
https://uoregon.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1635/collection_resources/71002/file/156953/transcript/88461/annotation/7
Speaker 5: Jim Weaver says he hates polls. All but 10% of the nation's federal forest firefighters are in action. 13,000 men and women from all over the nation on the fire lines. So much manpower is pouring into that state. The Federal Aviation Administration was forced to set up temporary air traffic control towers.
