Center Director Dick Reynolds says he doesn't know exactly why architect Norman Pfeiffer is making the stop in Eugene. He speculates it's to show off the facility to a prospective client. But both the architect and the city's facilities development department confirmed today that the purpose of the call is to perform an annual checkup on the halt. One area that's sure to get some attention during this house call are these wooden columns that provide the vertical support for the multi-million dollar structure and just what is causing their problems. Over the past couple of years, the columns have developed some very deep cracks. Some have even started to twist off center where they're joined to each other and to the roof. Deep cracks are not uncommon in Douglas fir beams, but the progress of the splitting has been so fast that it has a few people concerned about just why it's happening. The facility's development director says that he is not worried about the structural integrity of the posts. He just doesn't like the way they look. Among the largest additions, the Diamond Fieldson area just north of Crater Lake, the North Fork of the John Day River in eastern Oregon, the Sky Lakes Basin south of Crater Lake, and a sizable addition to the Three Sisters Wilderness. Of local concern, Rainbow Falls, northwest of the Three Sisters, is included in Hatfield's plan, and so is Waldo Lake in southeast Lane County. However, neither the proposed Middle Sandy Am wilderness in East Lynn County nor Hardesty Mountain, just outside Eugene, made the cut in Hatfield's bill. Much of the Diamond Thielson parcel is a recreational area in Hatfield's bill, meaning motorized vehicles and minimal timber cutting are permitted. And much of the North Fork of the John Day is a fisheries area, also a less restrictive classification than Wilderness. Congressman Jim Weaver isn't wild about those classifications either. But overall, Weaver says he's pleased with Hatfield's bill. It's only 200,000 acres smaller than the House bill that Weaver co-authored. And the Congressman says he's now willing to whittle his proposal down a little bit. He'll do that against the wishes of environmentalists like Kerr, who want Hatfield to enlarge his bill. As expected, Hatfield's legislation does contain language that will release land not designated as wilderness for other uses, like logging. But that doesn't satisfy timber industry leaders like S. E. Pittman of Bohemia, Incorporated, who predicts Hatfield's bill will force some mills into bankruptcy. Hatfield's proposal will go first to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and then on to the Senate floor. The Senator expects the bill to emerge from that process relatively unchanged. Then Hatfield will sit down with Congressman Weaver Widen and a coin to try and hammer out the differences between his bill and theirs. Coors would not confirm that, saying they have yet to get the required state permits. But other sources say the April 20th date is firm, and Tri-Cities distributors in Eugene will handle the product locally. State law prohibits so-called off-premise sale of unpasteurized beer like Coors. Off-premise means carryout sales from stores. But it can be sold on tap and in cans in bars and restaurants. Coors says Oregon's refusal to change its laws and allow the beer in state is politically motivated because of Coors' alleged opposition to labor unions. But state officials say they simply think unpasteurized beer is unsafe. Whatever the reason, state labor officials say they'll be in Eugene to meet Coors on April 20th if the company goes through with its plans. Butcher says he's not sure what sort of demonstrations will greet Coors, but he says demonstrations are a certainty, and he says they'll involve the Teamsters, the Lane County Labor Council, and anyone else with a stake in this issue.
