The company has offered five $1,000 scholarships to seniors who can propose ways to reduce litter and vandalism in their communities. A release from Teledyne Wachang's advertising agency indicates the company is donating the money to the Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism Program. Deadline for submissions is February 15th. The scholarship is built as an effort to produce greater awareness, understanding, and community action in improving the livability of the environment. Police allege he was able to run a speed lab out of two warehouses right in Eugene and dupe some of his workers into believing they were working for an aerospace contractor. Court records show last summer, police received complaints of unusual odors coming from two warehouses, one at 4065 West 11th, the other at 141 Wallace. By sifting through garbage at the back of one building, police uncovered part of a formula that the state police crime lab would later confirm as being part of a new recipe for nearly pure methamphetamine. Upon gaining a search warrant, police entered one warehouse and found a lab much more sophisticated than is normally expected in the illicit trade. They later questioned four or five workers who said they'd been pulled off unemployment lines by Harris and offered work in the lab. They were told they were making a secret casting material for a subcontractor of the aerospace firm, McDonnell Douglas. Harris fled Eugene before the charges could be brought. A computer search later turned him up in Fresno, California, acting on information from Eugene Vice. Fresno police were able to put Harris under surveillance. In two weeks, they documented him constructing a meth lab almost identical to the operation located in Eugene. He pled guilty, and a federal judge sentenced him to five years' imprisonment for the Fresno operation. He could get up to 10 years if convicted of setting up a similar business here in Eugene.
