The police chief's report for the city council is a summary of its strike strategy, tactics, and motivation from law enforcement's perspective. In it, Chief Everett Hall says the small number of incidents involving police response shows both sides demonstrated restraint. But he gives an explanation for actions taken at three trouble spots. One at Churchill High School where a striking teacher charged that he was struck by a substitute. The report says picketers were warned twice that they were violating the law. Hall says the batons were used in this incident in a jabbing movement. The batons never used as clubs. Secondly, at the fairgrounds. The report said picketers ignored warnings and the officers were required to utilize force to move the pickets. And nearly half of this year's hot dogs will be made from poultry rather than red meat. And since hot dog sales are down somewhat, hot dog makers are trying to tempt us with variations on the theme, like cheese fill. July is also the last big month for the retail sale of bathing suits. And we're pretty far from the days of scandal when the teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini made its debut. Nearly 20% of women's suits sold last year were two piece. But something's happened to our sense of bathing suit decorum. Ten years ago, More than half the women's suits sold were two-piece. And men are a little more modest, too. 82% of their suits sold last year were the boxer variety, rather than the skimpier brief. But when the sun goes down, it's off to the movies we will go. In case you wonder why all the moviemakers wait until summer for their big releases, the reason is pure, simple cash. Nearly half of us wait until summer to buy movie tickets. And then we spend millions on them. If Shakespeare is more to your liking on a holiday, there are Shakespeare festivals in 22 states this summer, including Oregon. But not one is in any of the 18 American towns called Stratford. But to most, the Fourth of July traditionally means fireworks. We've got nothing on the Chinese though. They didn't celebrate the fourth, of course, back in 1054. But the Chinese did have a terrific display of natural fireworks.
